I don't suspect any of them envisioned what happened. I think the expectation was that a small group of people (20 or 30) would somehow breach security and disrupt proceedings at the doors or in the gallery. Because, as you say, they're that stupid.

8. It appears to me this is the reason they don't want an investigation.

They expected to stop the certification of the election, and see Trump declared the winner. So, they never expected to have their complicity exposed.
My prediction: Dozens of Republican Senators and Representatives will be shown to have had a part in the insurrection. I expect some will actually be indicted.
Of course Senator Graham has that phone call problem that's most likely going to get him indicted.

...hand out masks to Repubs on the House floor. As she walked away, one of the Repubs said something and they all laughed. I can't help but wonder if the thugs were going to choose their victims based on who was wearing a mask and who wasn't.
