I was ecstatic to hear President Clinton clarify that Democrats have created waaaaayyyyy more jobs than Republicans and by that measure, are better than republicans on handling the economy. That has led many over the past 18 hours to ask why it is people trust republicans more on the economy than Democrats. So far, the answer I've heard is the hackneyed "Democrats are bad at messaging" response. And while Democrats have certainly had issues with messaging, it's not the answer to everything.
If you ask people which party is better at addressing civil rights, Democrats will win that one and it's not because Democrats are any better at messaging on civil rights than they are on the economy. People rank the parties and their strengths on raw perception. When people picture the republican party they envision exactly what is in the picture below. They see a huddle of white men. When they picture the Democratic party they see fewer white men and a lot more people of color, women, LGBTQ+ folk, uniquely abled, and non-christians.
White men in America have had a long history of being given credit and passes on things they have not necessarily deserved by a plurality of other Americans, particularly other white Americans. That same plurality will prioritize national security along with the economy as a "top tier" issue. White men who have sat atop the American power pyramid are simply assumed to be more adept at handling "bigger problems."
As we've seen, even when a white male Democrat as president lists his economic and national security achievements, the same American plurality becomes deaf. The first American president to make military strikes against al-Qaeda was Bill Clinton, a Democrat. The president who ordered the mission that killed Osama bin Laden was Barack Obama, a Democrat. The man who was president when al-Qaeda attacked the U.S. was George W. Bush who was extolled simply for being in office on that tragic day. Any popularity bump President Obama got for taking out America's public enemy no. 1 was negligible.
When the economy crashed at the end of the W administration, Barack Obama spent eight years coaxing it back to thriving levels. But it was republican rapist donald trump who inherited a healthy economy who got credit for helming us through our fiscal waters to a place of satisfaction. When Joe Biden restored our economy and jobs following the Trump Collapse, the only story was "stubborn inflation."
Of course, I hope all the best for President Kamala Harris. It would be wonderful if she guided us through the best period of peace and prosperity we've known in decades AND received proper credit for it. But I won't hold my breath. I don't expect any mutations in that American genetic programming that can't give credit due to anyone unless they're a straight white Christian male. But what would help is if all Democrats got on the same page and repeated early and often "republicans suck at the economy and they suck at keeping us safe."

(2,595 posts)until we hear this from talking heads and other commentators. Not mentioning it is practically giving more of the same pass. I think everyone knows it on some level, but don't want to open that can of crap.

until it's pointed out, and then you go, right on, I see
it now.
Thank you!
Also, Republicans came up with Arthur Laffer and all
that supply side, trickle down economics shit.
It didn't take long to see that it never worked, and was
just a ploy to move wealth upward.
And that's what they're still doing, and fuck the rest of us.
We really must channel Bill Clinton's savvy and change the
narrative on this. Democrats are always better on the economy,
and Republicans are always bad.

and the rest of us.

(11,026 posts)The "joke" is a tragically true commentary on the disparity in perception at work in our national psyche. I see it all the time. Unearned credit given to white men while judgement seems persistently reserved until evidence of excellence is overwhelming for women and others who don't fit the white businessman stereotype.

(15,359 posts)economy is just swell the whole time no matter how it's working for everyone else.
When democrats are in charge the wealthy still do good but always think it's not enough. It all depends on every time republicans are in charge they can suck up more wealth and property and if we never raise taxes on them, they take more of what there is for themselves without doing anything productive to earn it.
It's perfect. If they ever really do crash everything, they think they have enough wealth, power and property to weather the storm and still come out on top if not even wealthier. That's the reason for the militarized police forces. They think they can be brutal enough to make a ruling class and peasant society work this time.

(840 posts)Republicans are much better at pandering to stupid people by bringing black and white tribalism and overly simplistic views on the issues. Are things bad? Blame immigrants. Is there snow? Yes, well there must not be global warming then. And so on. Democrats fix the economy so Republicans inherit good economies. People don't understand how the economy got that way, they only see the here and now. Inflation is the here and now; that's why Biden isn't recognized for his work on the economy. People are simply too stupid to grasp complex situations.
