General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI wonder if any of this has occurred to Liz Cheney
If the thinking of those in her former caucus is so wrong when it comes to adoration of an autocratic rapist, might they also be wrong about any of the numerous policies on which she agrees with them?
I know that many here want to focus on the benefit of her break and thats good. But theres nothing wrong with asking questions, right?
I personally envision a future where lifelong Republicans (perhaps including Cheney) who voted for Kamala Harris realize that a responsible government that taxes and spends with a concentration on those closer to the margins rather than those with the most power isnt so bad after all. If thats the case, in a few years we can get back to more bipartisanship and less brinksmanship. It may well be a longshot, but Its what I think about when I think about Liz Cheney.
While I heartily welcome discussion, I politely ask to be spared of lectures on how I should be viewing Liz Cheney at this moment.

(12,387 posts)in her administration, I am assuming it is Liz and that is why she is campaigning so hard for her.

(5,054 posts)It's been pretty obvious that many Republican "Never Trumpers" don't only have an issue with Trump but issues with the greater Republican party as whole. I have no doubt that some (perhaps many) of them have softened their stances on at least some issues and moved at least a little towards the middle. But, we won't know what the Republican Party will become in the future until the MAGA cult is driven from power and rank and file Republicans realize they've been had.

(2,741 posts)I think any softening may have something to do with the fact that Limbaugh is dead. But of course the conservative media that followed in his footsteps rants on.

(96,884 posts)Her last few years of exile have given her time to reflect on her values and assess her stance and understanding of what's going on. See some movement in that direction as I have seen her even admit that the party might have to die and a different one begun to remedy this nightmare. They have gone too fr to reel back in, better to cut the line and attach a new hook and line.
With that transition, I think Liz will have made some changes in her views on some things. probably not a lot but enough to make her more reasonable. Her sister helped her change her stance on gays to some degree.
There is hope for her, she is using her voice for the right thing at the moment.

(2,741 posts)If I remember right, Liz latched onto anti-LGBTQ rhetoric to make her sellable as a gopper in one (or more) of her races. I'll moderate my grudge as even Obama adopted the "I believe marriage is between a man and a woman" line to align with the "mainstream."

(96,884 posts)That was then this is now sort of things. It's a whole different world this time around nothing is as it seems and knowing what is the appropriate thing to do matters.
I'll give her enough slack to show where she's at when this is over.

(17,112 posts)I view her as a skunk... a skunk who paints over her white stripe to look like a black cat.
She's poison for the Democratic Party and if/when Trump is defeated...
She and her ilk must be kicked out of the "big tent" ASAP.
We've go to get back to being the "Liberal" Party.

I applaud her for speaking out on that. It's so very important.

(19,014 posts)But PEOPLE DON'T CHANGE.
And I mean here, at their most basic, fundamental levels. I learned this lesson from a Professor, much older than I, back in my 20s. I argued the point but as I age, I accept that he is correct.
So given this, Liz Cheney will always be a conservative. But she is a principled one and there must be room in any political system for both right and left wing views; Remember, a government is only as good as it's opposition.

(2,741 posts)but with all due respect to your prof, people certainly do change. Not all people. But we all know or know of people who have changed their political persuasions.
Even behavior-wise, the Joe Biden of 2020 was different from the Joe Biden of 2010. He learned to keep his compassion (hands) in check. He took counsel to make decisions with the constituency of black women in mind. His capacity for growth at such a late age has been one of the things that's impressed me the most about him.

(27,915 posts)it will have any affect at all on Democratic Party policy. Point is to try to get back to the bipartisanship and compromise the majority of Americans say they want. Will be interesting to see what will happen.
BaronChocula
(2,741 posts)is that those positions are given to people you trust can help deliver on your policies. If Cheney differs on criminal justice issues, foreign policy, military, economic policy and just overall taxing and spending to run country, it would be harder to find a place for her where there is agreement.

resign or be fired. No problem. I thought Cheney used to be in the DoJ, that's not party policy. No problem.

Traditionally they would go to Transportation. Clinton and Obama both appointed Republicans to Defense briefly, but those were moderate picks. They were chosen because they had similar thinking to the president they served. My point is it wouldn't be easy to find any of that common ground with someone who is not moderate and Cheney is definitely not moderate. She voted with trump 90+% of the time.
