Dr Oz nominated for CMS head - he wants to privatize Medicare

Social Security Works
‪@socsecworks.bsky.social‬
Donald Trump just announced that he's putting Dr. Oz in charge of Medicare and Medicaid.

Oz wants to completely privatize Medicare, handing it over to for-profit corporations notorious for delaying and denying care — a plan that's also in Project 2025.

Hands off our earned benefits!

The private insurers would rather be taken to court by those of us with rare cancers, knowing we'll die before our cases are heard/ajudicated.

Not only are Trump's nominees on the wrong side of morality, they're about as smart as a box of rocks.

I can see him expanding the program to include everyone 65 and above or maybe 67 since that’s the new retirement age.

He will also be involved in the elimination of the ACA and the insurance reform section of that law as well. No matter your political affiliation, taking away denial because of preexisting conditions will be incredibly painful for everyone. We fucking can’t go back. So many folks will be put into medical bankruptcy and be assigned to an early grave. This has to be fought against, people have to rise up to keep this from happening. But when we take to the streets in protest will we be met the new hammer of the felon’s administration, our own military? Looks like it might be the plan. Fuck them for voting for this.

And original Medicare is primarily administered by subsidiaries of private insurance companies.

Won’t take much to privatize it more.

MA plans were the beginning of the privatization scheme. Now everyone will be corralled into them and we’re back to square one with private insurance companies holding us hostage. Getting rid of preexisting conditions will be final nail in the coffin. Premature deaths and crippling medical debt here we come.

for their parents's and grandparent's healthcare. GOPers are too greedy to do that. Not to mention, lots of folks -- including doctors, hospitals, insurers, etc. -- make good money off it. They will lobby and likely beat any real attempt to change things materially.

BREAKING: Trump is nominating Dr. Mehmet Oz to head the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid.

Oz was rejected to serve as Pennsylvania's Senator, and he'd be even worse in this position.

Trump has turned his cabinet into a bad reality show.

If you have Medicare Advantage coverage you like, that's good. I am commenting only on MY experiences.

My finances nearly collapsed when my husband and I paid for my mother-in-law's medication for 2 months between when she was covered by Humana Medicare Advantage in Virginia and when we got her signed up for Medicare + Medigap policy in Indiana.

Humana tracks when mail to their clients bounces back. They call anyone listed in the client's file to determine whether the person has moved out of their "region." They caught my brother-in-law on the phone within TWO DAYS of her leaving Virginia, and he (stupidly) told them she had moved.

Her policy said Humana had to be informed within 30 days of the move, which would have given us adequate time to set up another policy in Indiana so she would never be without coverage. As soon as Humana got off the phone with my brother-in-law, they FUCKING CUT HER OFF ENTIRELY. Medicare didn't automatically cover her after Humana dumped her. We had to file paperwork, which we would have done quickly after moving her to Indiana, but she had NO insurance coverage for weeks. NONE. We paid for her VERY expensive medications for two months, and if she had had an emergency that sent her to the hospital, we would have wound up paying for *everything*.

Fast forward three years: At the end of her life, when she had radiation therapy to reduce the size of tumors in her lungs - so she could breathe and swallow until she died of lung cancer - the cost was at least a million $$, and there were other expenses. I had purchased a Medigap policy that covered everything Medicare approved, and Medicare approved every expense. I *never* saw a bill.

Republicans created Medicare Advantage for the SOLE purpose of boosting profits for the healthcare industry. When trying to present and pass the bill, they kept referring to their elderly parents, saying that the Advantage plans were great, their parents would be on them and they would never allow their parents to be left without the very best care.

In response to the lying liars of the Republican party, a Democrat who spoke in opposition to the plan said that while it was clear they cared about THEIR parents, they obviously DID NOT CARE about ANYONE ELSE's parents.

The fact that nearly half of seniors have moved from Medicare to Advantage is the result of profit-motivated damn lies, lies, lies, and manipulation. Medicare Advantage is an abomination; it is entirely immoral.

If Medicare Advantage plans weren't making BILLIONS of dollars in profit by sucking clients' money out of the pool that should be reserved for client healthcare, they wouldn't be paying to air ads during every fucking commercial break from August to December.

And now, if the incoming administration does what they promised to do, my husband and I are going to be CHEATED out of having Medicare. The only reason the incoming administration will push to privatize Medicare and the VA is to make themselves $$$$$$ - filthy lucre - and provide only enough "care" that people don't leave them by the millions.

I live in a red shithole state in a (currently) red shithole nation. I am enraged. Their policies will destroy any hope I have of ever retiring after paying taxes for over 40 years. I am keenly aware that other lives are in danger of being destroyed sooner and more painfully than mine.

The caption states: “Canadian researchers analyzed 40 episodes of ‘The Dr. Oz Show’ and found that nearly 40% of the medical advice presented lacked a scientific basis, while 15% directly contradicted existing medical evidence.”

Fact-Check Analysis:

A study published in The BMJ in 2014 evaluated 40 episodes of “The Dr. Oz Show” and found that:

• 46% of the recommendations were supported by evidence.
• 15% were contradicted by evidence.
• 39% lacked evidence.

These findings align closely with the caption’s claim, indicating that approximately 40% of the advice lacked scientific backing, and 15% contradicted existing evidence.

Conclusion:

The caption accurately reflects the study’s findings regarding the scientific validity of medical advice presented on “The Dr. Oz Show.”
