I told him; "no, maybe in a couple of years, if we haven't become a fascist, police state hellscape, I might accept, but until then, it's best you stay on your side of the fence, and I'll stay on mine."
I think he might have been offended.

to attend the Senior Olympics .
I will have to face my Evagelical Crispy "christian" Veteran
Uncle who thanked God for Trump's re election .
I will have to face my Cousins Daughters who are
1) 2 are pro choice maga voters
2) one has fallen prey to the evangelical crispy fried "christianity through her now
husband father of her children's effort to win her back by getting sober. While I'm
thankful for his sobriety seeing pics on facebook of their 5 yr old son shooting a gun
at a church retreat/function absolutely breaks my heart .
I love my Cousin I will always love my cousin as she is the closest thing I have to a sister .
After the election I had to process my RAGE at the fact that she raised Magats . I'm still
processing that.
I'm on my 116th day of Sobriety from booze (still smoke pot with rx) I stayed sober
through the the election . I'm thankful I'll be clear headed going to this family reuion.

(7,488 posts)Now that they are 'on top', they want to act like we are the problem and that we are the ones acting like children.
I am not going to fall for their agenda and I hope no one else does. Like I once told a police officer who was saying something about 'respect the badge' just because it is the badge. I replied that 'respect was earned, not bestowed' (Thank you, Counselor Troi!).
He was not too thrilled about that.
Along that same line, these rethugs now want to act like they did not behave even worse when they were the ones who felt like they were on the bottom. Taking a lead from that orange gibbon, who is trying to rewrite history as we speak.
It won't work on me.

(97 posts)Being confrontational like that might actually serve to hurt the cause. When our side responds with hostility, it can push people further into their own beliefs rather than opening the door for understanding or dialogue. If your goal is to stand against things like division or extremism, acting divisively yourself only adds to the problem. A simple, polite decline, without the political edge can be fat more effective in keeping the peace and showing that we value civility over conflict. Sometimes, how we treat others can say more about our values than any political stance.
Dan
(4,478 posts)People that supported the attempted overthrowing of the government need our understanding so that we can keep the peace.
Once their Project 2025 is in place, we should smile to maintain civility.
Even when they plan to eliminate our rights to further their goals we should not add to the problem by acting divisively.
Maybe you have a point, but question - at what point should we decide to defend ourselves? Before or after we are in the camps?

You can find those folks in both rural and urban areas.
There is a glaring difference between our two major political parties. Let me see if I can....ONCE AGAIN...illustrate it.
Donnie Dipshit is the closest thing to an American Hitler/Putin that I have ever seen in my 7 decades on this planet.
He is a serial sexual abuser and degrader of women.
He is a felon.
He is a conman.
He is a racist and a bigot.
He is, perhaps, the most deeply ignorant, incurious and unserious person that mankind has ever produced.
The only thing that gives me hope is this: if we do descend into fascism, it will be the stupidest and most incompetent fascism in the history of the world.
The present Democratic Party would NEVER put such a vile human being forward.
In fact, if a Democratic politician ever used the term; "poisoning the blood of our country"; the Democratic Party would drag him off the stage in a straightjacket.
My MAGA neighbor and the rest of Donnie Dipshits voters, looked over the menu and ordered the "Shit-Sandwich".
I have no intention of sharing their meal.
TomCADem
(17,798 posts)There was once a time when Progressives were the ones who were on the cutting edge of using all available avenues to share progressives ideas at the grass roots level.
Now, it seems that the trend is to hide out in our safe spaces like this Board while we scapegoat the media, the establishment, etc., for the spread of fascist ideas.
In contrast, right wingers have been very active in reaching out and trying to spread their views. You need only go to a local school board meeting to see some right winger showing up at every meeting to complain about DEI or CRT.
IMHO sitting in our safe spaces scapegoating people is not going to result in change unless we convince people who do not currently agree with us that fascist and racist values are wrong.
Have you ever been successful in convincing a fascist or racist that their values are wrong? And if so, how?
A persons values dont change that easily. It usually takes a significant event, sometime like the birth of a child, etc. to make that change.
EdmondDantes_

Yesterday I had a conversation with an old friend that I have been drifting away because of his conservative beliefs. He made a racist remark and I automatically called him a bigot and he got offended by that and insisted he wasn't racist. Yeah right.
In the past I was more tolerant of listening to opposing views but I can't do it anymore. We didn't argue, but he yelled that all politicians suck and I decided to block him after the conversation ended. It's time they learn the consequences of their votes, beliefs and actions.

(65,939 posts)We grew up together, families were friends, etc. we'd stayed in touch off and on through adult-hood, although his behavior while drinking took a toll on our friendship.
Finally, our only contact was through email. Through the first Trump term he got more and more bigoted. Really hateful toward women leaders, Black leaders, gay people, etc. (I'm a gay woman married to a Latina/Indigenous woman.) He also said hateful things about my family. His excusing J6 was the last straw. I emailed him that I didn't want to communicate with him anymore because of his bigotry.
He proved my point when he ran to his elderly parents to complain about me and insist that they "cancel" me.
The last I heard from him was a mean blast from him when my mother died. What a charmer.

Im really surprised to still see threads like this. Telling off neighbors, disowning relatives. I thought most had already done that. You talked to these people after January 6th, after 4 years of trump impeachments and convictions. Its only now that youre telling them off and refusing to talk to former friends and relatives. Telling a neighbor to stay on his own side of the fence.
A fantastic winning strategy for 26 and 28.
Are we still thinking we can win by courting more MAGAs?
We are absolutely fucked!
No talk about courting more progressives? LOL
FUCKED.
PennRalphie
(406 posts)Senator Fetterman was considered very Progressive until he wasnt. I was surprised he wasnt a better surrogate in 24. But, democrats were attacking him, too.
This election should have been about the booming economy. The Democratic Party didnt have that message, especially here in swing state PA. The message was, we know the economys bad, President Harris will fix it. The economy here is booming. That was never the focus. It should have been.
I cant see where disowning relatives, telling long time friends and neighbors to stay on their side of the fence, will help at all.
Focusing solely on very progressive Democrats might work well in some states. Others maybe not. Hopefully the next group of Democratic campaign staffers will know what to do.

(3,506 posts)How?
By engaging robustly in debates with everyone. You aren't doing it under the illusion you'll convince Trump voters. They aren't the ones you hope to reach. The quiet non-voters are the ones who can make a real difference. They are everywhere, watching and listening.
Will they see you coldly walking away and not bothering to stand up for what you believe?
Will they see you being a shocking a$$ to the Trump neighbor/friend? (People don't like it when someone they know, friend or otherwise, appears to be mistreated.)
Or will they see you speaking up for your beliefs, countering the silly, illogical, or unfounded arguments of the Trumper? Through you, they could see and hear something that makes them think. And decide that by God, they'd better get off the couch, get informed, and vote.

(97 posts)Were smarter than that. Your argument is they fd around? That works as long as you dont mind having a President Vance. You are never gonna be able to brute force have a person change his vote.
