The far-right Oath Keepers paramilitary is trying to regroup under new leadership — and a new plan to recruit younger people, reported Rolling Stone.

The group, which burst into prominence during the 2014 Bundy Ranch standoff and consists largely of current and retired police and military, was active in plotting tactical-style group attacks during the Jan. 6 riot on the U.S. Capitol. Many of its most senior leaders, including Stewart Rhodes, received long-term prison sentences for seditious conspiracy — though his family is reportedly terrified that... Donald Trump could pardon him.

"The Oath Keepers now have a new brand, Oath Keepers USA, and a new leader named Bobby Kinch, a retired Las Vegas police officer who once gained infamy for making Facebook posts that appeared to call for a race war," reported Tim Dickinson. "These days, Kinch lives in the mountains of Southwest Utah, and adds a populist topspin to dark visions of impending tyranny: 'It doesn’t matter what your political persuasion; because if you’re not one of the wealthy elites, if you’re not one of the Davos, globalist, Marxist, progressive billionaires,' he said on a recent podcast, 'you’re going to be in the same box car as everybody else.'"

For his part, Kinch denies that his old social media activity, in which he wrote, “Let’s just get this over! Race war, Civil, Revolution? Bring it!" and said "I think we need a cleansing!” while still active in the police force, was an actual call for violence, adding that it's "pretty r------d" to view him as racist.

The guy was born in 1935, was ten years old when the war ended, so he was never drafted into the Wehrmacht like my father-in-law was. But he was old enough to be inducted into the Hitler Youth. He told me about it when he was about 70. He said there was no way anyone like me could ever imagine the thoroughness of their indoctrination. It was total immersion, a de facto removal of the boys' capacity for free thought, and a substitution of a robot-like devotion to the quasi-religion of National Socialism and Hitler worship. He said it took him years to realize completely what had been done to him and his generation. It's what the extremist wing of the Republican Party wants to do to our nation starting yesterday. Own the schools, force religion (theirs) on everyone, and eliminate any capacity for questioning the one and only "truth" they are taught.

14. It's rare to find Americans who have actually known former HJ members.

This guy was young enough to have been thoroughly indoctrinated, but old enough to realize it afterward. Though not really related, my wife called him and his wife her “uncle and aunt” all her life. He became the manager of a large bicycle factory (main mode of transportation where she grew up). He saw how smart she was, and had her managing finances and payroll before she turned 20. She only left because she wanted to see more of the world than a tiny farming village community offered. North America was beyond the scope of her imagination at the time though. At age 19, she thought it was a place she would never see.

I am on a rare 3 day visit to Dallas at the moment. Back up to DC on Wednesday, and then back to Düsseldorf Saturday afternoon.

And I'll never forget that presentation. She talked about how fun it all was. Youth leaders ran the show, and there were hardly ever adults around. Camping and hiking and visits to museums, and traveling to whatever the equivalent to a scouting Jamboree was. She said it never felt like brainwashing.

Until later on. It was in mid-April 1945 that a friend of her mother mentioned that there must be a storm coming, with all the thunder they could hear off to the east. Her mother responded: "Strange, there isn't a cloud in the sky" - this was right around the time that Zhukov began the final offensive at Seelow Heights.

I remember her closing sentence verbatim: "And the streets filled up with bodies and rubble, and the trees were filled with people who hanged themselves, and that was the end of my wonderful Hitler Youth experience".
