There is a campaigner posting on a bunch of subreddits trying to get it to happen. Mixed responses
Personally, I've got too many X links that I refer to every day for which there are no replacements at this time. (Day trader communities). Plus I know instantly if there is a tsunami alert.
Elon is losing money on X. My posting there doesn't benefit him. And I don't want to allow it to be a totally right-wing site. There is still a very strong contingent of progressives that post there. I support a continued progressive presence on X.
Purity tests rarely work out well for progressives. Let people choose their own media.

(32,739 posts)It won't cause important people to switch to blue sky.
Tweets are sometimes the only source of information. Too many Democrats are still on twitter and only about 1/2 of my local ones are one blue sky.
It takes bigger names to take it down.
So far, I haven't seen that Reddit has abandoned twitter. I'm reading that there is talk of it.
Reddit has 73 million daily users. Those that use twitter will than migrate to other platforms when they see that their tweets are not being shared.

(32,739 posts)Will you contact my city council person and tell her to get off twitter please?
Will you contact my Democratic state rep and tell him to get off twitter and get on Blue Sky?
Tell the NWS to get on Blue Sky. (Sure some posts their alerts, but it's not the same as the real deal)
Tell Ryan Hall Yall to get on Blue Sky Never mind, I found Ryan Hall.
Blue Sky and Twitter are not social media IMO.
They provide information from public entities that I'm involved with.
I'm already bummed enough about Trump.
Now I'm supposed to "disengage" from local resources because someone on DU tells me to "disengage"?????
I already feel isolated because of all the horrors with Trump. But now I'm supposed to disengage even more?

(6,675 posts)Why are there such loud voices all of a sudden trying to force people off X? Doesn't make much sense. Feels a bit suspect, to be honest.
If all the progressive voices disappeared from X, it would just create an information void, particularly at a time when Trump is banning information from health resources, etc. X needs progressive voices to counter the BS.
Elon doesn't make money from my X browsing - it's a money loser.
My feed on X is almost exclusively progressive content, news, health news such as epidemiological reports from researchers that will no longer be available from the government. Plus breaking emergency alerts, news from Ukraine, and specific communities that I follow for daytrading.
This "movement" to force people off X just doesn't make sense, and feels tyrannical.

(32,739 posts)I don't spend much time there at all. But I like to read a tweet if someone posts it. I am an other forums that are not political too. Or if there is breaking news etc.
I guess it makes some people feel good to call other people names. We're all ready down.
I barely use X....
Makes more sense to flood X with progressive critique than to further shrink our information ecosystem.

(1,948 posts)I tell everyone get off social media, no matter how big and important they may be, and have done so for years. Federal agencies, news sources, and politicians use social media because we are there, it is not the other way around, not that we have to be there because they are. Social media has replaced quality journalism and meaningful communications from institutions to a large extent, and debased what hasn't been replaced. The entire national political discussion has been debased, reduced to the level of bumper stickers. Collective memory is being systematically destroyed.
Republicans can advance their agenda with fear mongering, with emotionally charged one liners, with the endless repetition of simple minded slogans. We can't. We need a deeper and more sustained engagement with the public. Social media is the perfect communication tool for the right wing, and does not work for us. It is not a neutral tool. It can't be bent to work for us. Every time we use it we are helping our enemies.
When I see a tweet from a politician here I call their office and talk to staffers about how social media boosts right wing propaganda agenda and funds our enemies. That give and take human to human interaction doesn't happen on soil media. Talking to staffers is something I have done or a long time. They are the next generation of political leaders. I can't count the number of times that there were really productive conversations. However, it is becoming more and more rare for anyone in Congressional offices to answer a phone. Why? Social media.
Social media is the main reason we have Trump and the main reason people are isolated. It is an addiction, and I think that is why people get so upset when it is suggested they put it down.
I am not telling you to disengage, I am suggesting that you re-engage with the world outside of social media.
No one will listen to me about this, but I think someone should be warning people about the dangers.

DU is my only social media and I don't watch television news or opinion. I don't watch any advertising supported television at all. I was blocking twitter from my personal universe long before Musk bought it. I don't want their cookies, I don't want to be tracked by them.
DU is not my primary resource for political action, but it is a comfortable place to float some of my thoughts about politics, and the signal to noise ratio here is good.

(32,739 posts)When there is major breaking news, it often breaks on twitter.
Notices about parks, resources etc. Roads etc.
That's why it was created .
Twitter is often first before the media can write up the story and put in on a webpage. Webpages are cumbersome to manage, but any reporter can bring their cell phone and tweet: "We are in the Supreme Court listening to oral arguments" "Justice Sotomayor says........"
When in session, someone from the Texas Tribune will be live tweeting. It's kinda like our, "Live threads" on DU. You know when there's a debate and we're all watching and updating. It's similar to that.
We have also killed a few bills by tagging elected reps while they're in session!

I'm depressed as hell.
We don't need to be called Nazi collaborators when we're down.
Things are really bad right now and now we're suddenly Nazi collaborators? After I worked eight year resisting Trump? How I worked my butt for Beto, for Biden, for Beto again, for Kamala....and we're "collaborators"??
Is Kamala a collaborator? She's on twitter. Biden's on twitter.

(1,068 posts)We are going to have to give up some of our comfort. The social media giants have pledged loyalty to orange Julius , we cant continue to support people who want to take our freedoms. If Starbucks is hurting people because they want better working conditions lets help the workers. Our uncles , grandparents, sacrificed during world war 2 and many made the ultimate. Its up to us to keep fighting fascism and Nazi Musk. The Germans understood that salute, why cant we stand up and say its wrong and we wont support the racist, sexist gerbil.

Evidently, it's not Musk supporting the AfD, or throwing around Nazi salutes, but perhaps the illegal seizure of citizens' private data and the economic wheels of government would to it?
