I put my wilderness fire lookout on lockdown today. No more visitations by members of the public.

Again, like in 2023, I must be extremely vague about my location. Given the tragedy last Sunday in Coeur d’Alene and events today (7/4) in the vicinity of the lookout, I think you will understand.

I opened up the lookout on July 1. Usually during the July 4 holiday week there are some ATV riders that come up the hell-rough road to the tower. But none came until today (a rather cool, cloudy day which turned to rain, drizzle, and fog). Shortly after noon two side-by-sides (RZRs) and a quad came up. A man and woman (50-ish) in each RZR, and a teenage boy on the quad. More about them later.

During the hour or so preceding their arrival in the vicinity of the lookout, there were about eight concussive explosions from places well below me and maybe within three miles. Not fireworks. I thought: C-4 or 82mm mortars, harkening back to my Vietnam days. But then four more explosions seemed to be getting closer, and coming from the general direction of the road leading up to the lookout. Then I saw the three ATVs .. then they stopped at the saddle between my peak and the next over. Then there was a much louder explosion from the direction of the ATVs.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the national forest below me, was sporadic gunfire of all descriptions. But that is the nature of July 4 in the woods in the wild west.

Not longer after that last explosion, I saw the ATVs start moving again. I knew that they would be on the peak, below my 30’ lookout, in about six minutes. I didn’t need to lockdown because I stay lock-downed.

I watched as they parked and shutdown the ATVs. One male RZR driver had on a red hat that said “I.C.E.” I shit you not. What kind of sadistic fucking joke was THAT? Or was it a joke? He had a handgun in a chest-carry. The other male RZR driver had a MAGA hat, but no visible weapons.

One of the women passengers got out of the ATV and walked towards the stairs to the tower. I then went out on the catwalk and greeted her .. pleasantly. She asked if they could come up and visit the lookout.

At that point, I got to use a concocted story that two other lookouts and I had discussed last night. “I am sorry, but recent tragic events in Coeur d’Alene have necessitated changes in security procedures at remote locations like this. I’m sure that you understand. The lookout is closed to all visitors and, beyond that I am not authorized to discuss any security arrangements.”

Yes, she said. (Gunfire in distance). Things like that, I said.

“AND PEOPLE ARE EVEN EXPLODING SEMTEX,” she says. Who the fuck said anything about Semtex? How did she extract that term out of what we had discussed so far? Semtex is not C-4, but it is similar. And Semtex is preferred by terrorists because it is hard to trace.

I’m fairly sure that this was all innocuous, including the fucking ICE hat. But maybe it wasn’t. All aspects of this event were documented and reported.

I’m not paranoid. But I am.

This is always the difficulty with variations on the "one bad apple" slogan. For one thing, people seem to forget that the "one bad apple" spoils the barrel, the barrel is not just fine except for the bad ones. While one can hardly accuse people of personal failure for being unable to rein in the assholes, it is definitely a failure of the culture which creates them, and culture is created by people. We don't, unfortunately, have complete control of our culture, but it is curious how some seem more amenable to distortion and mis-appropriation than others.

Your comment sounds like one from someone who has never lived in a rural county. I live in a county of 36k in a 260 Sq mile tract of mostly forested or field/pasture land and nearly 100 open, operating churches. No cities. Most of that 36k became Republicans after the ballot stuffing scandal that ruined the party in this county, and they never came back.
So you tell me how I personally - or any one person in a rural county - should be able to "fix" about 32k people that we mostly don't know. They don't show that face out in public. It's very rare to have a discussion with someone about this because here in the South,
TALKING ABOUT POLITICS AND RELIGION TO PEOPLE YOU ARE NOT CLOSE TO OR DON'T KNOW IS CONSIDERED RUDE, ILL MANNERED AND INCIVIL. It's a fine way to get shunned and uninvited to anything.

They'll kill 'em all and let god sort them out. You see, the only thing Republican politicians hate more than Democrats is their own constituents. They hate being beholden to them for their votes, and would love to create a society where they remain in power, and can kill all the insects and animals they used to put them there. The massive cuts to Federal spending in the latest legislation, which will go a long way to starting the process of killing off people in the Red districts, should be proof enough of that.

Don't be deluded into thinking that Representatives and Senators in any way identify or have any sympathy for the people who constitute their base. They think they're suckers and losers, and they're not wrong.

There are explosions going on within 3 miles. Gunfire, too, which you say is normal for the 4th.

Two firefighters were recently ambushed and killed.

Numerous people show up wearing nutcase regalia and carrying weapons.

They want to come up to the lookout which we have seen before from pics. You are the only person there.

If I understand correctly, this would be the only sane response.

but I'm trying to imagine what scenario would being armed have saved him from harm? He reasoned his way out of it successfully. Had they tried to storm the tower he may have taken a couple of them out before he died but he'd still be dead. If he wasn't armed he may have been killed or not. He may have been able to out think or out maneuver them. It doesn't sound like they would have run away if shot at or threatened. They were heavily armed maybe with explosives and likely reeling for a fight. He was in a hell of a situation for sure, but being armed only seems like it would have been a death trap. He needs some other deterrent to keep them and their vehicles away and I don't know what that would be. He's just in a bad situation. It's anti-government, civil war, guerrilla warfare footing.

They can’t wait to use all their stuff for real in the big round-up. Thank you for standing up to them, DT.

Oliver North had planned to enlist the Michigan Militia and its counterparts nationwide to assist the federal authorities in rounding up “illegal aliens” and their citizen supporters in the event of protests against U.S. military interventions in Central America. When Rep. Jack Brooks of Texas asked North about it during the special House-Senate Iran-Contra hearings (and suspension of the Constitution), he was asked to table it for a closed session by Sen. Dan Inouye. Wish the national press corp had followed the REX-84/Readiness Exercise 1984 story, instead of burying it for Poppy and his treasonous crew.
