I haven't posted in a few months but I felt compelled to share the news that one of the DU originals who became a good IRL friend to me and many others has passed. He died suddenly this morning.
Some reading this will remember my friend as a shit-stirrer and he was. He was also ferociously hilarious, unendingly compassionate and incredibly wise. And I miss him. Remember the Laura Branigan wars? Or when he ran for pope? Or Veep? He always had such high goals.
To borrow some words of some friends I've shared this grief with today: You know how you meet someone in person once and you feel like you've known them forever? Sometimes once is all you get. Cherish that. Tell people that you like them. Or even that you love them. Tell them why you appreciate them as friends. It will save you regret later. Nobody likes regret.
So please join me, if you will, in toasting my friend. Our friend. I love you, Shawn. I am a better person for having known you.

(45,617 posts)When I joined Democratic Underground years ago, I found this guy named Dookus. SO incredibly smart and funny. I was sort of in awe of him, actually.
I didn't get to know Shawn in real life. We corresponded a few times. Talked some on Facebook. I dearly wished I got to know him better. There was an opportunity to meet him in person later this year. That didn't happen. I'm very, very sad that I didn't get to meet him.
He was a good guy who went way, way too soon. This is a fine tribute, PeaceNikki.

(30,414 posts)And one of the sweetest and most sincere people I've ever met. It was an honor to call him a friend. When we finally got together offline this past June it was - like you said - like meeting someone I'd known all my life.
That's how I'll remember him in my mind: getting smashed on Spanish wine and playing Patsy Cline on the jukebox at a dive on Capitol Hill.
And reliving the past decade or so, with him laughing and fondly recalling the time HEyHEY (whom he loved) called the police to do a welfare check on him and got him busted for possession.
I remember him being kind to animals, and how hard he took the loss of his beloved Tucker.
I remember how much he cared for my wife and checked on her when she was battling cancer. (Was it him that organized the bouquet for her? I want to say it was but I don't want to insult anyone else.)
He was a happy man when I saw him for the first and last time. He deserved it. I just wish he could have stayed around longer.

So, while this place isn't the same as it was 10+ years ago (is anything, really?), it was almost always part of his day. And, despite all of its warts, it brought a huge group of dozens of us together to form close friendships, a lifelong bond. And for that I am eternally grateful, DU.

(1,760 posts)Haven't logged on in years, but I met Shawn here then became friends on Facebook. He was so freaking smart, hilariously funny, and incredibly generous and kind.
One of the first times he really reached out to me was when my very premature son was about a week old and getting ready for a major surgery. I was falling apart and his words were so loving and heartfelt that I felt comforted in his reminder that many people were pulling for us. He allowed me to say the frightening things I had in my head that I couldn't say to family members for fear of upsetting them more.
He continued to follow my son's growth these past 2 years and always sent messages of love and support. He even sent a few gifts for my son and signed the cards "Uncle Dookus". That guy had a heart of gold. He told me once that he had never wanted kids but that my little miracle made him think about reconsidering that decision. He always brightened my day and I truly will miss him immensely.
I can't wrap my head around the fact that I won't get to read his hilarious status updates anymore. He was one of a kind and I loved him very much.

(13,860 posts)To the beautiful sentiments expressed here. It's comforting and lovely to see. Shawn was a special guy in so many ways. My heart hurts for those closest to him; I can't even begin to imagine their pain knowing how I, someone who is lucky enough to know he considered a friend, feel from across the country and having never met him IRL. I hope they're aware of the outpouring of love and support they have from Dook's online 'family'.
You left a big Dookie-shaped hole in our hearts, you brilliantly funny, master of the razor-sharp takedown, and unfailingly kind friend. Will always miss you.
PeaceNikki
(27,985 posts)We live in interesting times that I am not sure everyone completely understands. Relationships and friendships can be formed with people over the internet who you may never see face to face or whose voice you never actually hear. Those who have never had the privilege of such relationships may not fully understand the depth. But, make no mistake, these bonds, friendships, relationships are just as real as the more traditional. When you communicate with someone almost exclusively through written word, I think that both parties choose their words differently. You have a chance to re-read what you wrote before you hit send or post. You have the opportunity to re-read what the other person wrote to help you understand what they were trying to convey. And, today for me, the greatest gift is that I still have years and years of messages, stories, words of support and some of the funniest shit I have ever heard in my life. Jesus Christ, the man was funny.

Though I never got to meet him IRL, I found Shawn to be a great guy. I first encountered him during the legendary Laura Branigan death thread flame war of 2004. Both of us were amused at the utter absurdity of it all. Yes, he had an eviscerating sense of humor, of which once I was a victim, but I believe it hid a strong sensitivity, as if often the case with us sarcastic types.
Had things panned out, a bunch of us from the old days of DU were to meet, and I would have met him in person for the first time. Our plans collapsed long before Shawn's untimely passing. It saddens me that I will never have that chance.
May you find eternal peace, Dookus. I'll miss you.

Not sure if I'd call myself one although I'm in the minority thinking we must do something to Syria. Oddly Most Democrats and most Tea Party members are against this. Even got Tea Party newsletters telling other Tea Party members to encourage Dems to tell Obama no . Strange Bedfellows. Instinct tells me if we don't do anything about this now forget congress this will come back to haunt us. So when it happens here... hey we were warned.
