(26,398 posts)I am thrilled that it passed - as a first step - but I don't think it goes far enough to rein these people in. Healthcare should be a right, not a priviledge and while health Insurance c-level employees are still raking in 10s of millions in annual compensation, it is the latter.
I get that with the current system, it would collapse with the "suggestions" on pre-existing conditions (which they will find a way around anyway) without a mandate, but I wanted an optional Public Option in the mix.
I am THRILLED it passed as it is better than what we have, but remain unconvinced that the vultures won't turn this into a ginormous payday for their execs and shareholders, leaving the people who need it the most in the dust.
Meh.

(110,159 posts)cause to me that was a huge one. but, they fought it, and stock went down, sounding like not good for them.
and you are right. first step.
that is how kennedy did it. it was not all at once.

Maybe if there had been a Public Option? Or do you assume a non-profit option will emerge from this in the future?

(35,067 posts)that helps many children and especially folks with pre-existing conditions right now.
Of course it is not the plan I'd like to see. If you think we can get universal health care without more people in the streets I'd love to know how. Right now we have a bourgie "Occupy" movement that is sputtering and an election in which the candidate on the opposing side would be all too willing to push women in this country back 100 years. I don't think you want to see that happen and I sure don't either.
I find it incredibly short-sighted, greedy, and disgusting that folks in this country don't demand universal health care - but I am not willing to shoot down this president only to get one that is 100 times worse.

(36,639 posts)Doctors, hospitals, clinics, various healthcare professionals, AND their patients were already initiating what could have become a nonprofit plan. They've ramped up offering 'wellness' plans, etc to the uninsured for reasonable monthly fees, and as the pools grow - more people, more coverage and you're on your way.
No I would never expect politicians or wealthy insurers/pharma to 'give' us anything. We do it on our own.
As an aside, I wonder if the nonprofit plans people are buying will count as insurance under this new law? If not, this ruling really heads off a growing nonprofit movement that could have circumvented all the bs.

(35,067 posts)only rejoicing the fact that it will keep more people alive (as opposed to killing them which is what our ruling class is normally busy doing both here and in other countries).
As far as I'm concerned health care should be nationalized. I would be willing to bet there are more insurance agents than doctors in this country and that is one of the problems.

(73,257 posts)The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the Affordable Care Act. Sen. Bernie Sanders welcomed the ruling. "Today is a good day for millions of Americans who have pre-existing conditions who can no longer be rejected by insurance companies. It is a good day for families with children under 26 who can keep their children on their health insurance policies. It is a good day for women who can no longer be charged far higher premiums than men.
"It is a good day for 30 million uninsured Americans who will have access to healthcare. It is a good day for seniors who will continue to see their prescription drug costs go down as the so-called doughnut hole goes away. It is a good day for small businesses who simply cannot continue to afford the escalating costs of providing insurance for their employees. It is a good day for 20 million Americans who will soon be able to find access to community health centers.
"It is an especially good day for the state of Vermont, which stands to receive hundreds of millions of dollars in additional federal funds to help our state achieve universal health care.
"In my view, while the Affordable Care Act is an important step in the right direction and I am glad that the Supreme Court upheld it, we ultimately need to do better. If we are serious about providing high-quality, affordable healthcare as a right, not a privilege, the real solution to America's health care crisis is a Medicare-for-all, single-payer system. Until then, we will remain the only major nation that does not provide health care for every man, woman and child as a right of citizenship.
"I am proud that Vermont is making steady progress toward implementing a single-payer system. I hope our state will be a model to show the rest of the nation how to provide better care at less cost to more people."
(Wish my state were on board with Vermont's plan, but it's impossible right now.

(3,380 posts)As far as health care goes, my hope is that the insurances companies will be heavily regulated and health care costs drop to reasonable levels. I know HHS already made one price adjustment after realizing the prices they set were still too high so I hope for more of the same. When you can go halfway across the world and get cheaper, quality care with no insurance than you can get with insurance in this country, the system is ridiculously broken.

What too many do not seem to realize is that the insurance companies ARE the problem!

The need to be eliminated from the equation.
