Lawmakers approve raises for school, state employees

Pay raises for education employees and state employees got approval today in the Alabama Legislature.

Gov. Kay Ivey, who included the raises in her budget proposals, could sign them into law. For state employees, that would mean their first cost of living increase in 10 years.

State employees would get a 3 percent cost of living increase under a bill by Sen. Clyde Chambliss, R-Prattville.

The raise will cost about $57 million a year, about $14 million of which will come from the General Fund, according to the fiscal note.

Employees in Alabama's K-12 schools and community colleges would get a 2.5 percent increase under a bill by Rep. Bill Poole, R-Tuscaloosa.
