Alabama medical marijuana bill moves out of Senate with little debate

The Alabama Senate on Wednesday passed a bill that would allow medical marijuana in the state after a debate more striking for its brevity than its controversy.

The chamber approved the measure, sponsored by Sen. Tim Melson, R-Florence, on a 21 to 8 vote. The bill moves to the House, which has been skeptical of medical cannabis in the past. But Melson said after the vote that polling showed strong support for the bill, and that personal experiences of legislators could help its prospects.

"They had that family member that needs it," he said. "Or they realize they have a friend or neighbor that needs it."

In the River Region, Sens. Will Barfoot, R-Pike Road and Clyde Chambliss, R-Prattville both voted for the bill.
