Suspect found dead after ten hour standoff in South Anchorage.
Anchorage police discovered a man dead of an apparent suicide in a South Anchorage apartment after a 10-hour standoff with a SWAT team Sunday.
The man's identity has not been released pending notification of his next of kin, said Anchorage Police Department spokeswoman Jennifer Castro Sunday.
The incident started when Anchorage police received a call at 5:30 a.m. Sunday reporting that a man and woman were in a dispute at a residence on the 9000 block of William Jones Circle, off the Old Seward Highway between Dimond and O'Malley roads.
"The female left the residence and went to a neighbor's for help," Castro wrote. "She told the neighbor the male was threatening to kill her."
When police arrived they tried to contact the man and asked him to leave the apartment, but he wouldn't, she said.
A SWAT team was called at 10 a.m. and the apartment complex was evacuated because officers believed the man was armed, according to police.
