Romney proposes sending $1,000 checks to every American to ease coronavirus economic pain
Source: CNBC
GOP Sen. Mitt Romney proposed on Monday sending every American adult $1,000 to ease the financial pain of the coronavirus pandemic that has tanked global markets and threatened to grind U.S. economic activity to a halt.
The proposal from the 2012 Republican nominee for president came as the White House and Congress work to reach an agreement over the necessary stimulus measures to contain the unfolding economic crisis.
National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow, asked on Monday by a reporter whether the White House would support direct cash assistance to American households, paused and said we might.
The answer: could be, Kudlow said.

Will the GOP adopt Andrew Yang's idea or is this just a one time thing? IS there any chance this could make it through the Senate? If so would the President sign off?

(29,034 posts)People who make a certain amount over the cost of living in their state (and who won't lose a paycheck) shouldn't get it. Others should get more. The people who don't need it will ultimately just invest it.....oh, wait! Now I see what he's doing.
it's a nice idea but I don't need it as my company has instituted work from home protocol until further notice, so I will still be receiving a full paycheck every 2 weeks.

(4,893 posts)Essentially the Fed can print money to do it and call it quantitative easing. Normally this would be inflationary, but in an economic contraction of the scale we are likely to see in the next couple of months it would likely soften the landing and speed the recovery.

(5,998 posts)There's no time to figure out who needs the money now and who doesn't.
At the end of the year when this is over we can just have everyone who didn't need it pay it back in the form of taxes.
I think someone should also propose a debt holiday. Any loan or payment due is automatically extended without penalty. For example, every 36 month car loan becomes a 37 month car load with no penalties.

Of course for the disabled and elderly the various states and assistance programs need to be forbidden from counting it as income otherwise it would kick them off.

A flat $1000 over the span of ??? how long?
Four months? Six months?
A one-time payout of $1000 is not near enough for an extended crisis, if I'm reading the article at the link correctly.
Plus it's an incentive to actually do something at the root of the problem - which is dealing with Trump himself - take out the fuckin stinking trash to stop the US Treasury monetary hemorrhaging.

(11,885 posts)Because this is going to be a prolonged crisis, and it would stimulate the economy much quicker than other plans , and Like Senator Warren said , a $200 a month increase for all Seniors on SS ASAP and have that continue until its long gone. The people getting funds directly will help people the most right away, and they need help ASAP , not two weeks away maybe.
