Democrats try 'Trump-proofing' their states ahead of Election Day

Source: Washington Post

Washington and Massachusetts are stockpiling abortion pills. California is cutting climate deals directly with automakers. Colorado is rushing to protect the right to same-sex marriage. And attorneys general across the country are marshaling legal resources and privately plotting courtroom strategies.

From the West Coast to the East, blue states are preparing for the possibility that former president Donald Trump wins reelection in November by attempting to shield their policy priorities from the reach of a future Trump administration.

This preemptive strategy — “Trump-proofing” — encompasses a wide range of issues and programs that Democratic leaders fear could be targeted in another Trump presidency, based on his previous actions and his current campaign promises.

Even as they pursue such safeguards, Democrats are projecting confidence in their nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris, but they say it would be irresponsible to go into Election Day without a backup plan for their worst-case scenario.

3. What good is a backup plan when SCOTUS is in the bag for Trump?

He will attempt to rule by decree. Explain to me the mechanism to resist that. Slow courts? He's had a window to SCOTUS many times, on the fly.

recognized "states rights". That is an old concept fully embraced by the racist, RWers, that was added to the Constitution as a catch-all, and is what fueled overturning Roe, and other things.

The assumption has been that as long as the GOP controls a majority of states, they can continue to go with "states rights" to enforce their draconian agendas.

12. they claim to be for states rights on a national level and local control on a state level but

when the state legalizes gay marriage, they want a national "marriage protection act" and when local entities like municipalities want to protect trans people, they want the state to intervene with bathroom bills.

so if the state is doing something racist like segregation they are for state's rights but if a state wants to do something humane like enforce women's reproductive rights or legalize weed they want a national abortion ban and federal drug prohibition.

I'll admit they have gotten a bit better on the weed thing (just because enough of them smoke pot, which is weird they are so uptight) but have become way more reactionary on everything else.

6. The states are actually regulating their insurance coverage

which is why, for example, you see some that participated in the "Medicaid Expansion", and others did not. States also regulate their "marketplaces".

"States Rights".

then it's a possibility, although the insurance lobby is too powerful to exit your state entirely (even with it being SC).

States rights won't mean a damn, nor will any other kind of rights.
