Giuliani's son says dad gifted him World Series rings sought by election workers

Source: ABC News/AP

October 9, 2024, 2:09 PM

Rudy Giuliani's son is trying to stop two Georgia election workers who won a $148 million defamation judgment against his father from taking the elder Giuliani's New York Yankees World Series rings, saying in new court filings that he is actually the rightful owner because they were gifted to him years ago.

Andrew Giuliani, who was unsuccessful in a 2022 Republican bid for New York governor, said in papers filed Tuesday in federal court in Manhattan that his father gave him four World Series rings as a gift in 2018. He added that he and his father agreed that the elder Giuliani would temporarily keep one of the rings to wear around.

Rudy Giuliani received the rings — one for each of the Yankees' championships in 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2000 — during his terms as mayor of New York City in those years. In filings in a failed bankruptcy attempt this year, Rudy Giuliani listed three World Series rings as personal property as part of an estimated $30,000 jewelry collection that also includes expensive watches.

The Georgia election workers, Ruby Freeman and her daughter, Wandrea “Shaye” Moss, won the $148 million defamation judgment over Rudy Giuliani's false ballot fraud claims against them related to the 2020 presidential election. Freeman and Moss said Giuliani pushed Donald Trump’s lies about the election being stolen, which led to death threats that made them fear for their lives.

And the donor only owes the tax if they give gifts exceeding the lifetime exclusion which is almost 13 million dollars.

Fraudulent transfers to shield assets usually don't play very well. Take the damn rings and every single cent that bastard owns. Maybe sonny boy will take care of dear old dad when he's destitute. I wouldn't hold my breath.

If the rings belong to you, Andrew, why did your dad list them as his personal property in his bankruptcy filing?

I'll wait (probably forever).

... and let her ratfuck her shithead, lying brother and the lying, thieving Ghoul. Maybe, she will just plead the 5th like all lying, deceiving, thieving Republican Nazis? One would think that the complete and utter familial "shame" of Daddy Ghoul being "disbarred" in multiple jurisdictions not to mention being criminally indicted and charged with all sorts of felony crimes in multiple jurisdictions would teach that fucked-up family some modicrum of human decency towards the Ghoul's "victims" which, at the most minimum, would be to sell that useless sports bling and pay Freeman and Moss a few ducats from the proceeds thereof on the monies which the evil, criminal Ghoul owes to them.

Because Rudy was required to file a list of his assets? So if he gave them to his son why did he say they were his? Looks like the kid is pissed he won't inherit. Maybe daddy had life insurance

If they are seeking to liquidate your assets just 'gift' everything you value to a close relative!

The house? Nah, gifted that to my mother! Can't take that!
My cars? Nah, gifted those to my neighbour. Can't take them!
etc.

Does that actually work without documented proof?

33. The gift tax is commonly misunderstood.
Thu Oct 10, 2024, 06:38 AM
Oct 10

First, only the giver, not the recipient of the gift, is subject to a gift tax.
Second, the tax only applies to the amount of a gift that is above the annual limit, which currently is $18,000 per recipient --I think in 2018 it was $15,000. If you give more than the annual limit to any one recipient -- or $36,000 if you and your spouse jointly make the gift -- you have to report the gift.
Finally, there is no actually tax due unless and until the total amount of the gifts you have given over the annual limit exceed the lifetime limit, which currently is over $13 MILLION.

So, depending on the fair market value of the rings in 2018, and whether the gift was made jointly with his then-spouse, and assuming his claim of having given them isn't total bullshit, which it probably is, he would have been required to report the gift. But nobody ever goes to jail for not filing an annual gift tax form. Indeed, since no tax would be due unless his total gifts exceeded the lifetime exclusion, there is essentially no penalty.

If he declared them as personal property but now claims he gave them away in 2018 he's screwed because the property list was submitted to the court with these rings included. So they will remain his property the judge will claw this back
