Spanish PM Snchez urges countries to stop selling arms to Israel

Spanish PM joins a similiar plea from French President Emmanuel Macron.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez urged the international community on Friday to stop selling weapons to Israel, according to Agence France-Presse.
"In the light of everything that is happening in the Middle East, it is urgent that the international community stop exporting arms to the Israeli government," he said, speaking after meeting with Pope Francis in Rome.
"Let me at this point criticize and condemn the attacks that the Israeli armed forces are carrying out on the United Nations mission in Lebanon," Sánchez added.
The Spanish prime minister's comments come as Israel has intensified air strikes on Lebanon to hit Hezbollah targets. Its war on Gaza, launched after last year's Oct. 7 attacks by Hamas militants, has so far killed 41,500 people, many of them civilians.

(1,533 posts)Jews did the Spanish Inquisition torture and kill? How many fled to other countries? This is not unexpected from Roman Catholic dominated Spain. I suspect any relief from the overwhelming religious discrimination I experienced when living there (1957-1960) is minimal!

(9,353 posts)... When The Islamic Republic of Iran is no more, when Lebanon has been returned to its former glory, when Hamas and Hezbollah are bad memories, when the Middle East is united under the Abraham Accords, people will still hate Israel.

(33,424 posts)The decree was not fully revoked until 2015. At that point descendants of Jews who were expelled were entitled to be Spainards again if they could somehow "prove" they were descended from those expelled 523 years before. So, I am not surprised by the comments of the prime minister.
