Texas campus in uproar after protesters hold signs declaring 'women are property' on quad after Trump victory
Source: Independent
Hours before Vice President Kamala Harris delivered her concession speech, two Christian protestors caused disruption on a Texas university campus with signs that branded women property and used homophobic slurs.
The incident at Texas State University at San Marcos united students on both sides of the political aisle in anger as the men paraded around for an hour before being escorted off the property.
Eva De Arment, a 19-year-old sophomore, was in the universitys English building waiting for class to start when she saw Snapchat images of the signs, including one that listed women and slaves alongside cars as property.
Horrified, she rushed to the buildings office, asked for a sharpie, grabbed a flyer on the table and wrote: There is still love in the world! LOVE THY NEIGHBORS.

(967 posts)...to be hilariously pathetic and hypocritical. They hate each other over theological differences, but religious conservatives all end up pushing fundamentally the exact same shit, regardless of the religion in question. That's why the key word is and always has been conservative.

(302 posts)I'm 71 and oh so many years ago on an Indiana college campus, "street preachers" would stand in the middle of the quad and make fire and brimstone rants. They denounced women, education, and atheism. We would stop between classes and get a few minutes of fun poking holes in their diatribes.
I thought it was harmless inanity.
I was wrong...

(7,081 posts)most of the country was cool with the idea, floated by people like this and the rest of the GQP scum, that there is no such thing as marital rape. It wasn't so long ago, I remember it well on TV shows if the subject of rape was discussed when a man would say "just lay back and enjoy it" that there would be smiles and laughter.

(1,445 posts)Yes, it sounds radical, but again, this upcoming government won't help them, since they believe in male supremacy. With this government, shelters for abused women might very well be next to get cut.
GenThePerservering
(2,806 posts)is at all radical, nor carrying. IMHO, self defense should be fundamental in any girls education.
Carrying would be a step further and up to the individual.

(1,445 posts)I would not put it past these theocratic bastards that a women defending herself against a rapist, including fatally, won't be seen as a threat to male supremacy. They will see it as a misandrist attack.
valleyrogue
(2,010 posts)Arming yourself doesn't work and neither do "self defense classes" because if a dude comes from behind you and overpowers you, a gun isn't going to do fuck all. The man will simply grab it from you and use it or a knife or whatever against you. Men are way stronger than women on average.
The best way, the only real way, for women to be safe is to never date, live with, or marry men. "Stranger danger" is overblown by comparison.
Besides, it is not our job to "control" or "fix" men. The blame and responsibility falls clearly on them.
tornado34jh
(1,445 posts)But I am well aware and have seen what happens when it gets out of hand. I knew a co-worker back when I worked at a Walgreens in Virginia whose boyfriend was into drugs and all that. I never knew the person or have seen him, but I could tell he was not good for her since she would come to work and not in a good state. Luckily, she severed the connection and she is in a much better place. That same coworker had another man who was stalking her and actually broke a window at the store. My cousin, when she first married, had a husband who was very controlling, not just with money, but where she went. Not that long ago in Lakeland, when I was on the bus heading back home, there was evidently what was a toxic relationship between a boyfriend and girlfriend where I could tell the boyfriend was at least emotionally abusing her. I will never know what happened after they got off the bus. So I am very well aware of bad men. In fact, I am quite harshly critical of them.

(19,868 posts)I told her later this week, she's going to learn to shoot it with me, whether she likes handguns or not (she prefers shotguns). She understood exactly what I meant, and there were no complaints.
She's a 3rd degree black belt in Taekwondo as well, currently working towards 4th degree.
She's also been asking me for an engraved pocket knife, because her Girl Scout Troop offers them. I'll be buying her one of them now.
There's nothing radical about women using lethal force to defend themselves.
tornado34jh
(1,445 posts)They don't want women to be independent, to them, a women fighting back is radical to them. What I feel is going to happen is if a women kills a rapist, even though I think she has every right to fight back, they will see that as a threat to their system and will make an example for those who defy their beliefs. But I believe that the will to survive and fight back is very strong, especially if she has daughters. I am saying that if, as we are seeing, they want to criminalize women who go out of state to receive abortion that is life-saving, I don't see how she wouldn't be compelled to start having to defend herself when others won't. They don't want men to take responsibility for their actions. It's not unique to the US, it happens in many places around the world.
