Judge rules New York cannot block Texas from sending migrant buses

Source: The Hill

A state court judge ruled that New York City cannot block Texas from sending buses with migrants, who have crossed the U.S.-Mexico border, to the Big Apple. Judge Mary Rosado said in a ruling on Thursday the law New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) sought to use to curb the flow of migrant buses into the city is unconstitutional, The Associated Press (AP) reported.

Rosado said it “violates a fundamental right — the right to travel,” and that states cannot police interstate travel of passengers solely on their socioeconomic background, according to AP. She said the city should set its sights on Congress for a solution, not impose an “antiquated, unconstitutional statute to infringe on an individual’s right to enter New York based on economic status.”

The court slapped down the lawsuit Adams filed against a dozen bus and transportation companies in January this year. In hopes of cracking down on the influx of migrant buses into New York City, Adams sued 17 charter companies and sought $708 million to cover the price of taking care of migrants sent over by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R).

“We are reviewing our legal options to address the costs shifted to New York City as a result of the Texas busing scheme,” Adams’ spokesperson Liz Garcia said in a statement to The Hill.

It can seize products. Refuse entry. Detain on entry. As far as I know. Texas can ban citizens from leaving the state but can ship basically kidnapped people out of state? Something wrong there.

Why couldn't NY seize the busses if this happens again?

maybe this is how red states plan to deport migrants. sending them to blue states?

I was wondering if the countries where they came from would accept them.

just a thought that came to me.

Knowingly placing an undocumented migrant on a bus to be taken across state lines could be likened to moving drugs or guns in the same way (I'm not discounting the human factor, just making a point.). Someone needs to be held accountable, criminally.

the ones being bussed were supposedly processed by ICE, given hearing dates, and that is when Paxton started shipping them out.

We had a number of busloads come here to Philly and some had relatives/friends pick the people up at the drop off locations and others tried to get transport to other cities where they had sponsors/family, etc.
