Democrat April McClain Delaney wins a US House seat in a competitive Maryland race

BALTIMORE (AP) — Democrat April McClain Delaney narrowly won a U.S. House seat in Maryland’s most competitive congressional races that came to focus on reproductive rights and the economy. The state’s sprawling 6th Congressional District covers a wide swath of rural Maryland as well as more affluent liberal suburbs of Washington, D.C. The close race wasn’t called until Saturday, four days after Election Day.

McClain Delaney, who declared victory Friday, said in a statement that she is “deeply honored and humbled” by the trust the voters have placed in her. “Since the beginning of this campaign, our message has been clear: it’s time for common sense, common ground leadership that puts people over politics, defends our freedoms and values, and builds a future centered on unity,” she said.

A mother of four daughters whose husband previously represented the district, McClain Delaney campaigned heavily on issues impacting women. She pledged to protect reproductive freedoms in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2022 decision to end the constitutional right to an abortion and leave those decisions to individual states.

McClain Delaney, 60, previously worked in the Biden administration’s Department of Commerce and has focused much of her career on protecting children’s online safety.

This was originally David Trone's (D) seat (which had been redrawn in 2022). Trone left to run for Cardin's Senate seat but lost to Alsobooks in the primary.

My husband and I supported David Trone for the MD Senate seat in the primary. He was a good Rep and had the endorsement of Hakeem Jeffries. But we supported him most of all because he could self-finance his campaign, which we thought might free cash up for Senate races in other states.

That was not to be, so we supported Angela Alsobrooks in the general election, of course. But it did mean that a lot of DSCC cash had to go to her campaign instead of elsewhere.

We knew that this Senate seat could be competitive because Moscow Mitch had recruited Larry Hogan, the fairly popular not insane GOPer and former Governor to run for that seat, and poured Big Bucks into the state. In the end, Alsobrooks won with a good majority.

I'm so glad that Trone's wife will continue representing the district. They are truly good people.

Thanks for the report!

Her opponent, Neil Parrott, has gone on record opposing abortion in all instances without exception, and even more horrifyingly, has called for denying medical care to newborns with the Aids virus unless they are permanently tattooed with a declaration of their illness.
