Blue state resistance builds against Trump
Source: Axios

A week after the election, Democratic governors and attorneys general are sharpening plans to become the de facto blue state resistance to a second Trump term.
Why it matters: Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker and Colorado Gov. Jared Polis announced Tuesday the creation of the Governors Safeguarding Democracy organization as a leading voice against President-elect Trump's policies and to provide a playbook for other governors seeking to push back.
Driving the news: The effort will counter threats on state democratic institutions including independent judiciary, executive agencies and electoral system largely through legal action.
"What we are doing is pushing back against increasing threats of autocracy fortifying the institutions of democracy that our country and our states depend upon," Pritzker said. The rollback of environmental regulations, immigration politics, attacks on reproductive rights and "any threats to our democracy that come from any president or from foreign powers" are foremost in mind, Polis added.
The big picture: Democratic state officials across the nation are wary of another Trump presidency and pledged to play an adversarial role, just as they did in his first term.
In California, Gov. Gavin Newsom called a special legislative session for Dec. 2 to "safeguard California values and fundamental rights" before Trump takes office. In Washington state, Attorney General Bob Ferguson's team has studied Trump's campaign promises and Project 2025 to prepare lawsuits to block federal actions. In Colorado, Polis promised to protect the "Free State of Colorado." In Arizona, Attorney General Kris Mayes said she "can't imagine a single Democratic attorney general in this country that won't be involved in fighting unconstitutional behavior." In Minnesota, Attorney General Keith Ellison said if Trump "violates the rights of people, we're gonna sue. It's simple as that."

(5,353 posts)I live in the Republic of California. The majority of us detests Fascism. Not only do our State Governments need to resist, we grassroots must resist. Direct, indirect, or passive action. It doesnt matter. There are countless ways to resist; there is something for every individual.

(4,095 posts)Trump has basically announced that he his putting a newscaster in charge of the Defense. Apparently a Major from the national guard who also had some experience in the military. Plus as I understand it, he is now planning on purging the military of General Officers - that his committee determines are unfit (not loyal to Trump).
For those of you unaware -here is the ranking system as I remember from years ago - Thats the Corporation within the real military.
Major;
Lt. Colonel
Colonel
Brig General
Major General
Lt. General
General
Two pieces of history come to mind. Stalin purged his Military Officer corp and two plus years later when Germany attacked - Russia lost almost a quarter of their nation and millions of people, before they able to regroup.
Second - the last time a President decided he was going to get in the way of the military little war games, he was assassinated (not saying that the military did it).
Donald Trump knows Entertainers, Con-men, sexual exploiters, kiss asses, and fools - not necessarily in that order. They are not necessarily the best people.
So, what are we going to do about it - well, since the real Americans put him back in the White House, those of us who didnt want him - were in the back seat just along for the ride.

(1,988 posts)...about the elevation of a right-wing news talker to the head of the DoD was: "Well, that's thinking out of the box!".

(11,407 posts)Sometimes.Think outside the box????? To do that, they have to know what the f*cking box is. Think I'll hire a school bus driver to run a social media network. Is that thinking outside the box too?
Maybe America is just a Nazi fascist nation filled with idiots just waiting to show their ignorance and hate. Now all the stupid will come pouring out. Maybe our democracy was providing camaflage for all these fools.
We'll have to invent new words for idiots and stupid in the next years.

(11,407 posts)We have Ensigns and Admirals. And we have enlisted Petty Officers.
I just got a really long call from the Military Officer's Association. They are worried, very worried. They usually just serve as a lobbying group for our benefits. Now they are gearing up to provide more support to active duty officers and to keep our benefits.
I wonder how many times some of those same officers voted for Trump?

(7,787 posts)Their observation, that the DOJ and the American justice system generally has no useful means to curb the deleterious effect of criminals in government so long as they pose in political guise, is not an irrelevancy. Could be that observation, when given enough oxygen, would inspire some to repair that desperately critical condition. Or would you prefer the repair always be disappointing, "too little (or nothing) too late" so long as it maintains an acceptable, appropriate and, perhaps, debilitatingly Byzantine standard.
Please, give me the full rundown of why anything one does to effectively stop Trump's excesses cannot be accomplished lawfully or something. I'm sure it's all very informative and interesting but while we chat, the door to Jan. 20th, 2025, is closing, never to be opened again.

(58 posts)I am concerned when I read these pieces on blue state resistance that I never see Maryland governor Wes Moore mentioned. He has said he wants to work with tRump. That concerns me.

(16,296 posts)I expect he will start by focusing on undocumented workers in those states that he didn't carry.
California farm workers are easy targets for him; expect the cost of produce to increase significantly for the country when he deports laborers from the fields of the Imperial, San Joaquin, and Salinas Valleys. Sweatshop workers in LA and elsewhere will be harassed. Home construction costs will explode due to a shrinking labor pool, which will also lead to an increase in the price of resale properties. An increase in tariffs will reduce the amount of shipping through west coast ports, and consequently reduce the number of port workers and truckers required to move the goods. I anticipate an increase in both unemployment and crime rates as a consequence.
These actions would all create severe inflationary pressures on our entire economy, but TFA will just blame the effects on the Democrats in control of their state government. He will accept no responsibility for the chaos he will deliberately create. Musk has said to expect some economic pain when TFA takes office, and I wouldn't be surprised if the stock market tanks the day he gives his inaugural speech outlining his "plan" to attack the economy.
Other Blue states will be similarly affected, with some differences based on their employers. Maryland and Virginia will have a lot of unemployed government workers.
Just don't expect Devin Nunes' Iowa dairy farm to be raided.

(1,698 posts)It will force Trump to have to deal with a lot of honest people saying no.
It will give the military an excuse to refuse to follow illegal orders.
Trump's worst requires a lot of people to follow the orders of a sociopath--as they did in Nazi Germany. Our only hope is enough people will have limits on what they are willing to do.
We've got to make this as hard as possible for Trump. Slow walk this. He has dementia and he won't hold on forever.
How much power his successors will have is unknown. It'd possible the cult may be tied to Trump alone.
