'Are You Sh*ttin' Me?' Republicans React Poorly to Trump Picking Matt Gaetz as AG

President-elect Donald Trumps nomination of Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) as his attorney general has not gone over well within the Republican Party. Trump on Wednesday announced the nominations of several key figures to potentially fill out his cabinet. None sent the political world into a frenzy quite like Gaetzs, with members of his own party floored by the decision.
Now, to be clear, the Senate is in charge of confirming cabinet appointments. But that didnt stop Capitol Hill reporters from asking House Republicans and any elected official, really for their thoughts on Gaetz being appointed to lead the Justice Department. Shortly after the announcement, CNNs Manu Raju spotted Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) on Capitol Hill and asked for his immediate reaction to Gaetzs nomination. Graham was noncommittal.
GRAHAM: Yeah, I dont know yet. Ill think about that one.
RAJU: Do you have any concerns about it?
GRAHAM: Well see.
Gaetz is currently under investigation for allegations of sexual misconduct, illicit drug use, and accepting improper gifts. Asked by Raju about the allegations, Sen. John Corbyn (R-TX) Im sure that will come up during Gaetz confirmation hearing.

(5,595 posts)the asshole is planning on having them go on recess so he can make appointments that can last for up to 2 years, more than enough time for him to finish dismantling the country.

(30,862 posts)Gaetz is no worse than Trump.
So I presume they are pretending for a while that
there is a low too low with Gaetz, but I also
assume they'll all cave when the mob boss and
Putin pressure is put on.
Yet, they all support Trump, who is a convicted
fraudster, a known racist, and friend of Jeffrey
Epstein.
So this is some shit show, all right.

(443 posts)My stress levels are off the scale, but I always force myself to see the worst. Then if it doesnt happen I feel hopeful for a bit.i try to hope that as he uses up those in the house and senate, perhaps well be able to fill those seats during a special election for their replacements. It could tip the balance in our favor.

(1,853 posts)The department heads are there to be mere figureheads, to take the flak. So yes, they are entirely expendable. The behind-the-scenes assistants will be relatively shielded from scrutiny and much freer to do serious damage.
Thats what Im expecting, anyway. Needless to say, hope Im wrong! Id rather have incompetents leading incompetence so that they accomplish little
but I fear thats not how it will go this time around.

(26 posts)If Matt Gaetz gets smacked around and bloodied up, and eventually discarded - it doesn't mean much to Trump.
Whoever gets nominated after will sail right through; this is how Judge Cannon got into the office of AG.
It isn't like Gaetz could survive in this environment without Trump.

(263 posts)...Republican officials in general are reacting to this sideshow with anything resembling moral outrage, when in reality, it's always like...three. I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times. These people don't exist in a quantity high enough to matter--let alone have actual power--in that party, and haven't for a while now.
All of these fucking clowns are going to be confirmed. Even if Trump doesn't get his wish for recess appointments to bypass the process entirely.

(401 posts)... what MTG and Boebert (the rest of the peanut gallery) are going to get.
It also makes me wonder if the republican controlled House and Senate...especially the Senate ... will actively collude with or at least passively resist the usurpation of their power and privilege as a co-equal branch of government.
Giving up the right to vet the presidential appointments by agreeing to the recess gimmick gives up a lot of power, something Congress usually protect vigorously.
But we are not in usual times.
I can only hope their own self-interest will help protect the seemingly fragile institutional checks and balances.
