First GOP Senator to Oppose Matt Gaetz For Attorney General

Source: MEDIAite

Nov 13th, 2024, 5:20 pm

Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) became the first Republican Senator on Wednesday to say she will not vote for President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for attorney general, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL). “I was shocked at the nomination,” Collins told PunchBowl’s Max Cohen.

“This is why the Senate’s advise and consent process is so important. I’m sure that there will be many, many questions raised at Mr Gaetz’s hearing,” she added. Cohen also reported on North Carolina Sen. Tom Tillis’s reaction:

Tillis on Gaetz: “It’s gonna take a lot of work to get to 50” yes votes. Tillis adds it will lead to “Popcorn-eating confirmation hearing” content I’ll give him an honest look, Tillis adds.

Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) told Cohen he’s “’still trying to absorb all this’ when asked about Gaetz for AG and Gabbard for DNI. Cornyn visiting raised his eyebrows when first informed by the press of the Gaetz pick,” added Cohen.

The Republicans will have a 53-seat majority in the U.S. Senate, but have signaled a willingness to allow Trump’s cabinet to be installed via recess appointments.

... shocked? Is shocked the new concerned? Why would any politician in Washington find something from Trump shocking? Where has Susan been for the past eight years? Shock is the norm, Susan, sweetie, and you should have figured it out long ago. You should expect more "shocks" in the next four years.

As soon as news broke that President-Elect Donald Trump would nominate firebrand Congressman Matt Gaetz as his attorney general, a scrum of reporters at the Capitol wanted to know what Sen. Lisa Murkowski thought.

“He’s under investigation by the House Ethics Committee but now he could potentially be attorney general,” a Bloomberg reporter said.

“Do you think he’s a serious candidate?” Murkowski asked, poised at the door of the Senate Chamber.

The reporters tossed the question back at her — is Gaetz is a serious candidate?

“Not as far as I’m concerned,” she said.

Four or five republicans will voice their opposition prior to the first hearing and he'll withdraw his nomination and Trump will give him a non-senate-confirmable role or a donor will put him in a board seat

When the vote comes up, she'll make sure she is "safe" and vote accordingly.

Bet she'll say "Well, I'm sure he learned his lesson".

so that a "recess" could occur for him to appoint. That will be the key. Will have to watch in January when they start drafting their Rules.

And another Senator I saw on TV I didn’t recognize. One more and he can be blocked. 50 vs 49

Plus, I understand he can’t go back to the House. Rack him up as the first Republican Cheatolini has destroyed this time. Add him to Sessions, Barr, and others. The only thing TFG is good for.

Imagine Kevin McCarthy chuckling.

Edited to add they don’t have 53 yet.

you will be put on Trump's Revenge Hit List, and be "primaried" out of existence, and be replaced by a loyal Trumphumper.....

And some of us will never forget you facilitating every last thing Trump has done for eight plus years, especially after knowing what he was capable of doing as early as 2016......

He will kick you to the curb, and roll you under the bus, as he has done with every last person that has dared to cross him........

It's Dems + Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, John Thune. Not great but maybe at least not exactly a full rubber-stamping of Trump's plans.

The senate has to make sure that Trump can't get around with recess appointments.

when she is sure he has 51 yes votes. That way she can look centrist again. But if he struggles to get to 51, she will, with deep concern, vote for him as the office just too important to leave vacant.

Trump sure learned his lesson, right, Susan?

Useless piece of crap.
