Walmart employees are now wearing body cameras in some stores

Source: CNBC

Walmart has started giving store-level associates body cameras to wear as part of a pilot program at some of its U.S. locations, CNBC has learned. It’s not clear how many of Walmart’s stores have the recording devices, but some locations now have signs at entry points warning shoppers that it has “body-worn cameras in-use,” according to witnesses and photos posted online.

In at least one store in Denton, Texas — about 40 miles north of Dallas — an associate checking receipts was seen wearing a yellow-and-black body camera earlier this month, according to a shopper who shared a photo with CNBC.

“While we don’t talk about the specifics of our security measures, we are always looking at new and innovative technology used across the retail industry,” a Walmart spokesperson told CNBC. “This is a pilot we are testing in one market, and we will evaluate the results before making any longer-term decisions.”

Walmart, the largest nongovernmental employer in the U.S., is testing the technology after smaller retailers started trying body cameras at their own stores as a way to deter theft. Body cameras and the footage they gather are commonly advertised as a way to prevent shoplifting, but Walmart intends to use the tech for worker safety — not as a loss prevention tool, according to a person familiar with the program.

They dont pay a lot, so my expectation is that employees have to do what they have to do to stay fed.

This will also be usefull in firing anyone that becomes inconvenient. With enough video they can find something to fire you for cause when they noticed you talking friendly to a shopper with a union shirt, or whatever.

Most of the union jobs are government job - local, state, and federal and most of the private company union members tend to vote Republican which is totally anti-union. Up is Down in America.

Amazon, Walmart, etc. Im sure they hire union busters anytime there's a whiff of a potential of a union trying to form.. because they are just a farce and not important.

The problem is that many private company union members, even some union officials at the lower levels, vote Republican (anti-union) and bitch about union dues. They don't appreciate what they have and in most of the South the word "union" is toxic much like "liberal". Police, Firefighters, and many other govt. employees that is not the case.

No doubt that employers do not want unions or anyone telling them they have to share their profits.

Like I said, I worked as a union member for 26 of my 33 years and was able to retire early because of my pension (Defined Benefit Plan).

I have never been in a Walmart and never will. They built one of those behemoth in a town I lived in and within a year our local hardware, florist, tire shop, grocery all closed. If your shopping at Walmart you are part of the problem.

like I can drive around and find another store to shop at and I don't consider myself part of the problem.
Walmart has been very good to me, I'm on their preferred O/O list and they pay top dollar and will allow me to use their facilities to clean up and, if necessary, stay overnight in their parking lot.
Don't condemn those that shop there, it's convenient and cheaper for millions of Americans, if you don't want to shop there, fine, but don't disparage those that do.
