We are deeply saddened by the loss of Tulsa Football Legend and Hall of Famer, Howard Twilley, the statement read. Twilley was one of the greatest receivers in College Football history, setting numerous NCAA records before venturing to the NFL and winning two Super Bowls. Our hearts and sympathies are with Twilleys family and his many friends.
Twilley was a legendary wide receiver for Tulsa, coming second in the 1965 Heisman Trophy race behind USC running back Mike Garrett. Following his college career, Twilley moved on to the NFL where he set records for receptions and receiving yards in a single season134 and 1,779, respectively.
Miami drafted Twilley in the 12th round in 1966. During his first year, the team brought in coach Don Shula, who immediately took the Dolphins to victory with 10 winning games and a spot in the playoffs. The team dominated the 1973 season, going undefeated and taking home the victory at Super Bowl VII, where Twilley caught a 28-yard touchdown pass and the Dolphins took a 147 victory over Washington. The Dolphins repeated their showing at the 1973 Super Bowl, prevailing over the Vikings 247.
