We may already be past the ability to have a free and fair election, and the GOP is going to try every cheat they can;

https://signalpress.blogspot.com/2024/06/we-may-already-be-past-ability-to-hold.htmlIf you've been paying attention, you know that the Republican party is going to use every possible resource that it has to make sure the results of the 2024 election are not certified, and that somehow, they can cheat the constitution of its power to guarantee the American people the right to elect their own leaders. I'm not exaggerating. Go take a look at the collective record they're making as we head to the 2024 election.
The conservative, Republican legislature in the state of Ohio has already tried to figure out how to pass legislation to keep President Biden's name off the ballot by setting an earlier deadline for getting it there than the Democratic party will meet with the nomination at their Chicago convention this summer. That forced the Democrats, and the Biden campaign, to change their rules on how a nominee is named by the party, to make sure the official announcement meets Ohio's deadline. As far as I can tell, while that did ring some alarm bells and get some action, it was an "on our heels" kind of reaction.
These people are going to do everything they can, including cheat in every possible way, to avoid another Trump defeat at the ballot box. They think they can do it, and get away with it, because what they've seen so far, a conclusion with which I would concur, is that no one will hold them accountable.
Author's note: The following paragraph has been edited to reflect the incorrect assumption that the legislation passed in Ohio regarding the cutoff dates for party nominees was just recently passed. It it not new specific to this election, but what the legislature in Ohio has done is refused to waive the date for the Democrats, as they have done for both parties in the past. The early date requirement, however, is still a tool being used by a conservative legislature to make it more difficult for Democrats to get on the ballot.
The conservative, Republican legislature in the state of Ohio has already tried to use legislation passed earlier, regarding when names can be accepted for its Presidential ballot, to keep President Biden's name off the ballot by refusing to waive the deadline for getting it there than the Democratic party will meet with the nomination at their Chicago convention this summer. They have waived it in the past, when the Republican convention wouldn't meet the same deadline. That has forced the Democrats, and the Biden campaign, to change their rules on how a nominee is named by the party, to make sure the official announcement meets Ohio's deadline. As far as I can tell, while that did ring some alarm bells and get some action, it was an "on our heels" kind of reaction.

(106,359 posts)I scoured the link, "signal press" and read the about signal press. While I don't say I could not have missed it, I did not see Marc Elias' name nor anyone id'd as the author of the article.
So why do you believe he wrote this?

(17,983 posts)...they WILL be throwing everything at wall, and we must be ready to dodge their attempts from every angle.
But I think there may be a mistake in the OP? Wasn't the earlier Ohio nomination deadline set by law a few years ago, before the Democratic party set this year's convention date? The OP makes it sound like the Ohio deadline was set deliberately earlier this year in reaction to this year's convention schedule.

(16,514 posts)But in 2014, 2016, and 2020 they waived the date requierment for both parties. This time around the Rethug convention is earlier enough that it did not conflict. But the Dem convention was to set too late to announce who was nominated and the legislature this time around refused to offer a waiver. So Biden's name was to be omitted from the Ohio voting ballot when printed.
It was all just Fascist bullshit political games and flexing of political muscles.
A pee pee contest often partaken by little boy's. I can pee further that you can - so that makes me top dog and you the little fuzzy kitten.
Grow the fuck up men,... stop acting like little immature boys.
Think. Again.
(17,983 posts)....and I agree, it was very weak attempt to be bitchy and I guess they thought they were going to use it to get some other legislature passed, but perhaps the OP should be corrected to reflect that.

(13,836 posts)The DOJ may get a bit more active since Republicans whacked Merrick Garland upside the head with a two by four, to reward his "fairness".
Learned the hard way how to "play fair" with scum.

Personally, I see NOTHING appealing enough to switch over. And besides, its a party full of bad guys.

(113,130 posts)because the assholes in this country have tried it forever, from stuffing ballot boxes to simply having them go missing into a mop closet (which they did here in NM before we changed the system in 2005). As long as boxes are sealed, the seals haven't been broken, and the chain of custody is strictly maintained, the cheaters are going to have their work cut out for them. My guess is that they'll take the Jim Crow route, having gangs of armed thugs standing around polling places. I also think law enforcement is going to get sick of clearing them out and is going to stop being gentle with dumb white guys.
However, if TFG is able to diddle the EC again, it will be our last election of any kind.

When they rule illegally, and not in accordance with the constitution, we have to be ready to stand up for our votes. We can't just rollover and say, "oh well," like when they stole it from Gore.

(853 posts)plotter, and managers of the coup have be held to account. Ergo, if you continue couping nothing will happen to you. So coup away.
Prosecution is meant to be at least as much of a deterrent as a punishment. This has been a major failing of the DOJ and Garland in particular.

(2,954 posts)I feel pretty certain that the upcoming Republican shenanigans (crimes) have been heralded well enough by the GOP that Dem party leadership has taken note. Id be shocked if there arent defenses planned. There was a lot of concern among us about the Ohio ballot. I, for one, was gratified that the resolution of that potential disaster was fairly graceful. Biden is a consummate politician. He isnt going to be surprised by these goons. Dark Brandon is kinda real.

(1,445 posts)This country is in big trouble. Not seeing the actions needed to sufficiently stop it. The other day for the first time I actually got a stomach ache. Bad one. From the stress of that very issue.
I want to believe this will be fixed somehow.

(5,959 posts)I want to believe that there are Democrats taking notice, and doing everything they can to call it out and prevent it. But I'm like you, I don't see the actions needed to sufficiently stop it. I keep waiting for the DNC to ramp up the rhetoric and start firing. But, for the most part, they seem to be hiding in the background, and they've got a lot of money, so I don't know why.
