The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsMy grandson left this morning on a 4-day 8th grade trip to Washington, DC.
It's a full agenda every day; a whirlwind of government buildings, museums, and monuments including a stop at Gettysburg. Ummm, speaking of their daily itinerary, before the trip a student was chosen to participate in an essay contest for the honor of participating in a wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. My grandson will be doing the honors for his most excellent essay. Imagine that...what a great young man! I'm so proud.

(19,806 posts)I don't know when I first heard that some schools would have school trips to DC. I certainly had forgotten about it
So now it comes back as a surprise.
Heh, we never had that in NYC!
I went w my family in '64 as a kid to DC bc we visited, and stayed w my aunt & uncle in Virginia just outside DC.
I don't remember much of visiting places. Maybe bc my dad was suffering from shingles!
But we did visit the then very iconic white picket fence of JFK w the Enternal Flame.
I had the photo for decades.

(4,014 posts)They raised hundreds of thousands every years to supplement their budget. That way they could pay a few extra staff and fund some trips. Washington DC and two overnight trips one in 4th and one in 5th grade. The level of fundraising at the posh public schools always bothered me as you'd go to a less posh school in Brooklyn and their whole fundraising goal was $60 or $70,000 trying to get one part time gym teacher or whatever. I'd like to see a sharing between the most lucrative PTAs and the most needy ones. I really wish the Dept of Defense or big pharma had to run bake sales to make their budgetary needs.

(26,524 posts)I hope he really enjoys himself. Children are so powerful but many don't hear it enough.
Their power is their ability to give us hope. Please thank him for that on my behalf.
🏆Congratulations🏆 to your grandson on his achievements. I'm sure that he will have many more. I share your pride.
Thank you so much for sharing this, Backseat Driver.
