My S.O. had to visit a client after we went shopping to give her eye drops. (She is a caregiver.) Being in a rush, she backed into the driveway and left me in the car, where I had a view of the yard across the street.
There were 5 small statues in the yard. One was a man sitting in a chair with a floppy hat. The other was an eagle taking fight. Couldn't make out the others as they were unpainted, and the light was dim.
Suddenly I realized I had seen them and this yard before.
I asked her when she came out if I had been there with her before, and she said no.
I went through a period in my life where this happened a lot, to the point where it got difficult to hold a job.
It was frightening.
This time I wasn't frightened. But it was as real as real gets. I'm not scared anymore, I just wish I understood it.
My theory is that everything actually has already happened, past and present aren't "separate" as we think of and experience it in ordinary life, and occasionally we get a glimpse beyond the illusion. In my experience, it's actually kind of comical because the moments are never in a "spiritual" setting, always perfectly mundane occurances.
Weird shit.

(241 posts)Heavy!
Kind of like the 40 lb. box of cat litter I had to carry up 3 flights of steps when we got home.
Great grounding exercise!

(241 posts)Actually, Einstein and others might agree with you about the possibly-illusory nature of time. It's also said that to God, everything sort of happens simultaneously -- he's sort of above it and can see it all at the same... time.
In other news, I shan't scream if you go to my rap video post ("Donald Trump Is a Rapist" and make witty comments yourself. Enjoy!

Either that, or the early 70's have finally caught up with me.

(736 posts)For years she would have this dream where she would walk to the top of the stairs in a house, and when she got to the top of the stairs there would be nothing there--the stairs would just stop. Years later she and my father-in-law went to Europe. The tour they were on went to this old villa. They walked up some stairs, and when they got to the top, there was nothing--the stairs just ended--just like her dream. She never had that dream again! I used to tell her she was psychic. Even before caller I.D. was even thought of, the phone would ring and she would know who it was. It wasn't that the caller called at the same time each day--she just knew who it was. I asked her once if it creeped her out, and she said no, it had always been like that for her. So as you have done, she just accepted it. We are who we are. Life happens as it happens. I like your theory of the past and present being intertwined. It's comforting to me to think we've experienced what's coming already!

(21,796 posts)It's happened most of my life, but got so intense for about 5 years, in my 40's that it interfered with ordinary lfe.
This was at the end of a 10 year stint of formal Chinese martial arts training that is geared toward elevating your senses awareness to a very high degree.
Once or twice I walked into a new workplace and froze.
The building interior and layout, the people, the foreman and the exact words he said to me - I had seen and heard every bit of it before in exactly the same way and sequence. "Excuse me, I forgot something in my car" - almost ran out the door and never went back. Not a good look with the employment service, which dropped me.
Things did get better as time went on, though.
As with your Mother In Law, I have hopefully made peace with it.
Much appreciated, thank you!

(736 posts)It would also be hard to explain to anyone that didn't know you. I'm sorry your experiences frightened you and caused you pain.
My mother-in-law was one of the most accepting and loving people I've ever met. She never let anyone intimidate her, yet she was unfailingly kind to everyone she met. I think it was her ability to accept things as they are that helped her to be such an exceptional person. I wish she could talk to you about your similar experiences, (she died in 2000.) She loved stories about premonitions and psychic experiences, and would have really enjoyed hearing yours. Thank you for sharing your experience. It brought me a good memory from my my mother-in-law's life, (she loved telling that story!) I miss her every day.

(10,805 posts)It was when I was in high school. We were in the gym for PE because it was raining, and I just saw some kids climbing a rope suspended from the ceiling, nothing of significance, but I was absolutely sure just then that I had seen/lived that exact moment before. It kind of made me nauseous and shaky.
I have heard the theory that the deja vu feeling is the part of the brain that perceives things "lagging behind" sensations that have been experienced a split second before. I believe that this phenomenon is more likely to happen during times of stress.

(19,023 posts)That when our physical body dies, the molecules, atoms, the microscopic portions live on. When a new life is formed and developed, some of the particles from others' brains join the new physical body and once in awhile, we get a memory from one of those atoms.
Carl Sagan said the cosmos is in us, that we are made of star-stuff. Both ideas embrace the indestrucibility of matter.
I have occasional flashes of deja vu, and they are mundane. I don't get them as often now as when I was younger. I think that some of the flashes of deja vu transferred from dreams I had previously.
