I dont know about being Dutch, but my dad would often get pickled herring and it was always a treat regardless, if it was on New Years or another day.

(6,619 posts)Our daughter-in-law from the Netherlands spends the whole day making them. We all end up with powdered sugar all over our faces laughing our heads off. Best served with champagne and small children in the room, if available.

(415 posts)fancy food at midnight, use to do champagne, now non alcoholic sparkling something. Not sure we will be up until midnight this year, due to various health issues. So fancy meal will probably later on new years day.

(185 posts)Black-eyed peas. My mom was raised in the south and we had them every New Years Day. I still make them every year. My mom always cooked them with a big chunk of ham, and made cornbread, collard greens w/ bacon, roasted sweet potatoes and pecan pie for dessert. I still make the same meal to carry on the tradition. For a different suggestion: My daughter-in-law is from China and for Chinese New Year she makes dumplings, rice balls, fish (usually salmon), fresh fruits, and fried noodles. Happy New Year!

(518 posts)Good luck with your dinner. Just keep saying "YUMMY" as you browse the kitchen and figure out what weirdness you want to make. Be creative! Have fun! Remember what it feels like to be 15 and have a little control over a kitchen. Don't hurt anything!

(9,386 posts)Having originally come from TX, it's been black-eyed peas. I couldn't find any at the several stores I went to over the past couple of days so yesterday I ate Lentil soup...
