- Trailer, 'Lust for Life' is a 1956 American biographical film about the life of the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh, based on the 1934 novel of the same name by Irving Stone which was adapted for the screen by Norman Corwin.
The troubled life of famed painter Vincent Van Gogh is the subject of Vincent Minnelli's adaptation of Irving Stone's fictionalized biography. Kirk Douglas stars as the Dutch painter, who endured a life of squalor and hardship for the sake of his art, which went virtually unnoticed in his own time.
It was directed by Vincente Minnelli and produced by John Houseman. The film stars Kirk Douglas as Van Gogh, James Donald as his brother Theo, with Pamela Brown, Everett Sloane, and Anthony Quinn as French post-impressionist painter Paul Gauguin.
Douglas won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor Motion Picture Drama for his performance, while Quinn won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lust_for_Life_(1956_film)

(53,410 posts)I watched it many times because it was a work of visual art. One of the first movies that recreated the places that Van Gogh painted. I believe the cinematic recreations were the first time art was used as a model to recreate actual physical places. There was no cinematic trickery involved. Just a great attention to details in his paintings. It was visually wonderful, and Kirk Douglas was Van Gogh with his ability to portray a tortured soul. And, of course Anthony Quinn was a great actor, perfect as Paul Gauguin.

(42,908 posts)on Vincent. Quinn as Gauguin was magnificent and authentic. Agree on the visuals, sets and acting that was outstanding.
There's a great production film about the making of 'Lust for Life' with picturesque scenes filmed in the town of Arles and hellos to descendants in 1956 who remembered Vincent. I can't find it so far but will keep checking.
Meeting Kirk that time he bumped into me was funny, lol.

(53,410 posts)Watching him act was riveting. He dominated every scene every time. He really put all his passion into his work, unapologetically.
