Maybe the bottom lip could be a little more like patent leather--or maybe just a tiny bit sharper? (But don't do it if you think it will wreck it!) I love this doggy!! I'm not a painter, but I am a photographer (mostly dogs) and I always love their little lips. The catch lights in the eyes are really good!

I’m delighted that you put the blue that the photograph picks up. I thought of saying something about her coat picking up reflected color but I decided to wait and see what you did. In my opinion you did a great job on her face, her muzzle with the gradations of black. Her eyes are fantastic! Expressive, alert, shiny and you added just a touch of white on the lower lids so her eyes look moist and shiny.

With a bit of work on her collar and the background it will be finished and beautiful!

You talent for depicting animals is truly showing.

good to leave the lighter sections since that would be where the light is reflected. If you add more to the darker sections to show it’s in the shadow side you would get it to look like it’s around the dog’s neck. You’ve done a great job of giving the dog a 3 dimensional perspective. You can do that to the collar too.

The background feels to me like it needs to be developed to the level you’ve developed in the dog. Maybe one more layer of wash, or areas of wash for more intense color. You do it all the time in your skies and grounds. It’s always evident in your art in the architecture and in your nature painting.

Just a small amount of work would do it. Just to bring the entire painting up to the level of completion that you have in the dog.

Of course all portraits are quite difficult and very challenging, but practice and determination brings out phenomenal results. I hope you pursue this kind of painting too, because you’re good at it. If you do you will do wonderful work. I can definitely see you being commissioned for work like this if you develop it!
