When I lived in Mexico City we went to the Palacio Nacional in the Zocalo, which is where the conquering Spaniards just razed the center of the Aztec culture and built the Christian Cathedral on to of the rubble. It’s all still there to this day although a few decades ago while tunneling underground to build a subway the ancient Aztec pyramids were found. Today it is taken care of and part of the tourist attraction of the Zocalo square.

The National Palace is used as the center of the modern Federal Government (like the State Capital buildings in Washington DC.). Orozco Rivera painted his famous murals in the arched halls of the Colonial style building. He depicted the peasant lifestyle of the indigenous people, as well as their crops and customs. He also depicted the history of Mexico. The conquest of the Spaniards and their cruelty and the Viceroy rule and the many wars the Mexicans won against Spain and France. He included the Mexican Revolution to gain equality. I was able to see all that in person. It’s incredibly impressive to see the immense murals.
