Related: About this forumCrucifix from reclaimed church wood
A commission I finished, the corpus body is made out of red oak from old church pews from the church being renovated. The cross is chestnut from trim removed. This is the second project like this I have done, the last crucifix was from attic boards from another church.
I enjoy the challenge of these types of jobs.

(34,370 posts)So beautiful! How long did that take you to do? Just curious, I always wished I could do something like that but besides lacking the talent I lack the patience it would require.

(989 posts)I work on it for a day or two then do other things, I would say I have at least 20 hours in carving but there was a lot of preparation before hand cutting and gluing and major wood removal before detailing I would guess over 50 hours total.
I do a lot of production chainsaw carving I have those times down pat.

(53,410 posts)Your work is excellent. I also like the way the stain looks. It adds to the dramatic essence of the sculpture. Do you get commissions for your sculpting work? I see some signage work in the photographs too. From all the equipment and the general condition of your studio its obvious you take your craft seriously.
Thanks for showing the different steps in your process. Its impressive.

(989 posts)Yes this piece is a commission actually it is not stained just rubbed with linseed oil.
I have been doing woodworking for most of my life I started in high school vo tech beside some years in the army I have been in woodworking in one form or another. Mostly making furniture, I branched into signage and sculpture about 14 years ago to diversify. First I was just carving for fun then people wanted to buy my work.
My wife and I usually go to art shows to sell my work covid put a stop to that this year.
