OCTOBER PHOTO CONTEST--Announcement

Last edited Tue Oct 1, 2024, 09:57 AM - Edit history (3)

I'm getting started with the October Contest a little bit early because I want us all to have more time to consider or create our entries for October.

This month is special. It was originally scheduled to be hosted by AndyS, who we lost to cancer last December. He was a long time member of DU, an accomplished photographer and more than an anonymous friend on a message board to quite a few DU'ers. We've lost some other long time, much appreciated, respected and well loved DU members this year, too, so I'd like to use my host's prerogative and dedicate the October Contest to the memory of those we have lost.

Grumpy Old Guy, having won the August Contest, has selected the theme for October to be:

"Photos that remind me of a song."

And when he added--Anything goes, the possibilities are endless--I, of course, thought I'd provide a link, just to get us started:

Anything Goes, by Cole Porter. Covered by Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga.

Here's the calendar for the October Contest:

Submissions will open October 9 and close October 16th. There will be only one entry per photographer and it must be original work.
The title for the photograph entered should either be the song title, OR a particular lyric from the song that will make the connection of the photo to the song for the viewer. Contestants may share in the Comments thread for the contest either the lyrics or a version of the song that is brought to mind by the photo which they have entered in the Contest.
Preliminary threads will run from October 17th for 72 hours and Finals will be posted as soon as possible afterwards to run for 72 hours.

Have fun!

On edit: It occurred to me that I should remind everyone now--and will re-emphasize it again when the Submissions thread is posted--that photos which have previously been entered in a contest may NOT be entered again.

Your lovely words about Andy brought the tears. Thank you so much for honoring him this way. I think he would have loved this theme! He was so creative with his photos.

And thanks as well for the length of time to choose or take a photo that fits. That will be a most interesting exercise!

together can be very moving. I listen to music all day long, but usually the radio that is tuned to the classical music station, which originates here in NC. Sunday morning I put on CD's of my favorite singers. It's not unusual at all for me to be reminded of a song by something I see.

My favorite photos are ones that tell a story. Why not a musical?

It also occurs to me--riffing on moon titles--that I will need to emphasize the rule that photos which have previously been entered in a contest are not eligible to be entered again in a different contest. I'm thinking particularly of one photo of the moon shining on water that was entered in a contest within the last year, maybe?

But the work she did --particularly the special --with Tony Bennett was very touching.

Not my photo (so I couldn't enter this shot), but showed up on a friend's FB page the other day and I immediately remembered the quote from Ella Baker becomes a song by Sweet Honey and the Rock. I've recently been listening to their CD from many years ago.

I'm afraid many will pick essentially the same photo and song, so good luck to everyone!

How many people are choosing a photo then assign a song to it, and how many think of a song then look for a photo?

It really did literally make me think of the lyrics from a song. The song is on a Streisand album that I occasionally play on Sunday mornings when my favorite radio station is playing church music rather than the classical music it plays the rest of the week.
