Realtors, labor unions and progressives fight for power on Phoenix council

Special interest groups are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to influence the Phoenix City Council election on Nov. 5.

Who wins will shape the future of the nation's fifth-largest city — a city at the center of navigating some of the nation's most complex problems, such as police reform, climate change, water resources, housing and homelessness.

Groups representing the homebuilding industry, realtors, labor unions and blue-collar families have their hands in multiple council races and are supporting opposing candidates.

The outcome stands to shift the balance of power on Phoenix's nine-member council.
