Arizona Biltmore. One of Frank Lloyd Wright sprights statues fell off its pedestal and killed a boy

PHOENIX - Days after a statue at the Arizona Biltmore fell onto a little boy, the Phoenix Police Department says the boy died from his injuries.


The incident happened at around 9 a.m. on Nov. 27 at the resort, which is located near 24th Street and Lincoln Drive.

It's unclear how the statue fell from its pedestal.

At the Arizona Biltmore, there are statues everywhere. Inside the resort, children are everywhere.

The hotel is packed with families visiting for the holidays. The statues are made of concrete, weighing hundreds of pounds and standing nearly six feet on pedestals.

"We don’t know what caused this. We don’t know what was going on before," Capt. Keller said.

It's unclear what secures the statues to their bases.

The path of the sprites took another turn in their journey at the request of Frank Lloyd Wright’s widow. A mold of the ‘Solemn Sprite’ was created, allowing for the casting of several new sprites. These magnificent creations were then gifted to the Arizona Biltmore in 1985. Standing as a testament to Wright’s progressive architectural style, the sprites also symbolize the protection of the earth and its abundance.
