Final charge against Arizona border activist dropped

TUCSON - A judge has approved the federal prosecutors' motion to dismiss the final misdemeanor charge against a border activist acquitted of felony charges for helping migrants evade authorities.

Scott Warren is still accused of operating a motor vehicle in a wilderness area. It stems from his work in Arizona with the group “No More Deaths.”

In November 2019, Warren was acquitted of felony charges of illegally harboring two migrants in Southern Arizona.

According to Wednesday’s filing, “in the interest of justice,” the government is pushing for the court to “dismiss Count 1 with prejudice”.

A different take:

In Arizona, federal prosecutors on Wednesday dropped a misdemeanor charge against humanitarian aid volunteer Scott Warren, one day before he was to be sentenced for driving on protected lands to drop water, food and other aid to migrants crossing the Sonoran Desert. The single misdemeanor count was the last charge faced by Scott Warren, who at one point faced up to 20 years in federal prison for felony charges of harboring migrants, after he provided food, water and shelter to a pair of men who barely survived their journey into the U.S. After a first trial ended in a hung jury, Scott Warren was acquitted of felony charges in a second trial.
