London Breed touts progressive support as ranked choice wrangling ramps up

Mayor London Breed may not be forming a ranked choice alliance as part of her reelection bid any time soon, but she’s trying the next best thing: She’s landed the endorsement as a No. 2 pick in ranked choice voting of some of San Francisco’s leading progressives, including her 2018 mayoral rival, former Supervisor Jane Kim, Supervisors Hillary Ronen and Shamann Walton and Public Defender Mano Raju.

Her strategy is two-fold: First, she wants to attract progressive support without forming a public alliance with her rival, Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin, in the hopes of getting his voters’ second-place votes.

And second, she hopes to broaden her support now that one rival, nonprofit executive Daniel Lurie, has become the most popular No. 2 choice among voters, earning 21 percent of second-place ranked choice votes, according to a September KRON/Emerson College Poll.

Breed, however, isn’t the only candidate trying to corral progressive support. Lurie’s campaign said Thursday that former state Sen. Mark Leno, who formed a ranked choice alliance with Kim when both ran unsuccessfully against Breed in 2018, is backing Lurie as his second choice behind Peskin. Matt Gonzalez, a progressive former president of the Board of Supervisors, is also backing Lurie as No. 2 behind Peskin.
