Chyanne Chen will represent S.F. District 11 in a much-needed win for progressives

Political newcomer Chyanne Chen will represent District 11 on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors after a drawn-out election in which seven candidates vied for Ahsha Safaí’s old seat.

Chen’s election marked a much-needed win for progressives, who are currently outnumbered on the board by their moderate colleagues. Connie Chan, Jackie Fielder, Myrna Melgar and Shamann Walton are the other progressives on the incoming board.

An immigrant from China who arrived in the U.S. as a teenager, Chen said that as a supervisor she will advocate for more robust translation services for monolingual speakers. Her platform emphasized public safety, investment in child care and services for the elderly, and revitalization of small businesses.

She drew endorsements from labor unions, tenant groups and influential politicians — among them Assembly Member Phil Ting and U.S. Sen. Laphonza Butler. Buoyed by their support, Chen rose to be one of three top contenders in a crowded field, narrowly edging out her nearest competitor, Democratic County Central Committee member Michael Lai, with 50.4% of the vote.
