Race for Delaware lieutenant governor unusually fierce

For the first time in decades, the Democratic primary for lieutenant governor is not a foregone conclusion.

Since at least the 1980s, the party's nomination has gone without contest to a politician who has climbed through the ranks and is on track to become the next governor.

Each of the last four lieutenant governors — including Matt Denn, who left the seat vacant when he was elected attorney general, and Congressman John Carney, who faces no primary challenger in his race for governor this year — were elected twice without facing an opponent in the primary.

Six people from up and down the state are scrapping to win the Sept. 13 nomination battle. In their quest for Delaware's second-highest office, their campaigns have collectively spent almost $475,000 this year.
