Delaware lawmakers eye bonuses for state workers, other spending
Delaware state employees soon could see a $500 bonus in their paycheck on top of the pay raises already proposed by Gov. John Carney part of a $92.5-million mix of spend-and-save initiatives approved by a panel of lawmakers on Tuesday.
"Our state employees lag way behind in the region," said JFC co-chair Sen. Harris McDowell, D-Wilmington. "We felt it is time, since we have a little leeway in terms of resources, that we make up for that."
The bonuses collectively valued at $23 million were among dozens of funding enhancements that the JFC made to Carney's $4.25 billion budget plan during the opening day of its two-week budget writing process.
Other increases included extra money to support services for adults with disabilities, enhance special education in elementary schools and create a dedicated SORT team in the Delaware State Police.
