The Washington Metro region has had more severe thunderstorm warnings than any other place in the country this year -- 516 severe thunderstorm warnings since January, to be exact.
We only had 456 warnings for the entire year," Lampkin said. "And that was a lot. It is more likely that we're going to see these extreme events like tornadoes and wind damage events, and strong hurricanes and tropical storms because of climate change.
According to Lee, the region's mountain ranges play a large role in weather patterns.
Our area is very unique because we have two mountain ranges to the west," Lee said. "We have the Blue Ridge Mountains what we call the Alleghany front. And then we got the influence of the Chesapeake Bay, which is a big moisture source that adds energy to our region in terms of thunderstorm and flood potential.
Basically, the geography of the DMV creates a perfect storm for trapping in the moisture and energy along the I-95 corridor.

(19,312 posts)Not everyone knows where or what the mentioned DMV is.
I'm sure this is helpful to someone, but who, exactly? Thanks.

(106,575 posts)I still don't know what else it stands for--the first three pages of google give nothing but Division of Motor Vehicle-related results. I guess we should all take our raincoats and umbrellas when we renew our driver's licenses?

(22,969 posts)Maybe "Del-Mar-Va" as in Delmarva Peninsula? D.C. is right next to that area.
It's the peninsula made up of parts of Delaware, Maryland and Virginia forming the eastern side of the Chesapeake Bay.

(Del MAR VA sounds reasonable.)

(19,312 posts)Whenever I see or hear, "DMV" I cringe in fear of the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. It's a primal reaction anyone from New York can attest to.
I'd never heard it used in any other context before.
I did read the article, but still couldn't find anything that explained what it was.
Everything go alright at the Dentist's? Nothing serious, I hope.
