Last week, Bonner General Health, Sandpoints only hospital, announced that it will soon cease delivering babies. No new obstetrics patients are being accepted, effective immediately.
The hospital cited multiple reasons for the decision which lawmakers do not control, including the local cost of living. But there was one factor squarely in the Legislatures wheelhouse.
The Idaho Legislature continues to introduce and pass bills that criminalize physicians for medical care nationally recognized as the standard of care, the hospital said in a press release. Consequences for Idaho physicians providing the standard of care may include civil litigation and criminal prosecution, leading to jail time or fines.
This is not confined to abortion.

(92,705 posts)They have to be registered but I guess it's easier to prosecute them for whatever crimes the abortion ban prescribes.
Sadly, Bonner General has always been unsupportive of midwifery and recently the most ( then) current , experienced successful and popular was sued out of business and moved out of the state. Right wing politics are presently trying to take over the library board , faith based education wants public funding to endanger public education, county commissioners have been wingers for years , open carry is an overly pathetic thing. But far North Idaho is a stunningly wild and beautiful place and used to be far more accepting and is worth fighting for . so we will.

(92,705 posts)Lived there for 14 years, went ot college there and was pushed out by the bullshit and a personal boost by senator wide-stance himself. I got tired of the death threats and harassment. Once enough of them know who you are and what you look like, it's a dangerous place to be.
I laud your perseverance! I was hoping Montana would remain sane but that's not happening so much these days. Been here, in Montana for longer than I was in Idaho and I am staying in the northern Rockies, even if it kills me... which it most likely will.

(9,571 posts)the Forced-Birth fanatics. The pressure has spread from anti-abortion voters going to the polls and primarying any pro-choice candidates. Its gone well beyond that: the anti-abortion block now controls the state partys party machinery. Any would-be candidate has to toe the anti-abortion blocks line very carefully and very exactly or their political race is dead three steps past the starting chocks.
I think that Republican Party is hopeless. The only way citizens of Idaho will be able to get decent healthcare for their wives, their daughters, the sisters and their granddaughters is to stop voting for Republicans. I repeat: Stop. Voting. For. Republicans.
There is no other way.
