Edwardsville Police Confirm At Least Two Dead After Tornado Rips Amazon Warehouse, Search And Recove

EDWARDSVILLE - Edwardsville Police Department Chief Mike Fillback confirmed at 6:45 a.m. on Saturday there were at least two fatalities at this point after a catastrophic weather event at 8:33 p.m. on Friday, December 10, 2021, caused damage to a significant portion of the Amazon warehouse located at 3077 Gateway Commerce Center Drive South, Edwardsville.

Efforts being made to notify next of kin at this time,” Chief Fillback said.

A press conference was held at 5:45 a.m. Saturday at the Edwardsville Public Safety Building, 333 South Main Street in Edwardsville.

Edwardsville Police said search and rescue operations are continuing at this time. The following agencies are on scene and assisting: St. Clair County, St. Louis City, St. Louis County, Madison County Emergency Management, Madison County Sheriff’s Department, Pontoon Beach Police Department, Mitchell Fire Department, Alton Fire Department, Hamel Fire Department, Madison Fire Department, Glen Carbon Fire Department and numerous other police, fire, and EMS agencies. Additionally, several heavy equipment operators are assisting.

1. Thank goodness for our rescue workers/emergency workers/etc. We were hanging around on the

first floor to make sure that we could get to the basement if needed, and watching the dot on the TV signifying the one particular tornado as it tore across the northern parts of the North STLMO metro area, the Edwardsville / Amazon Warehouse was the worst of the damages from this one particular tornado, but there were other areas hit too by this long tracked tornado too.

Other areas hit were (in extreme NW part of Metro STLMO) Augusta and moving towards Weldon Spring, in an area 2.5 miles west of Defiance, which then continued East across the river eventually into Illinois (Edwardsville). One elderly lady was killed near Defiance.

And we didn't have any heavy rains, winds, or anything like that either (in the urban core of south STLMO). It's amazing what these storms can do.

Someone did catch a picture of these storms, and actually caught two tornados on the ground, side by side, so there is speculation that this was a twin set of tornadoes on the ground at the same time.
