Moody's gives Illinois second credit upgrade within one year

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois on Thursday received its second credit rating upgrade from Moody’s Investors Service within one year, moving up one notch but remaining in the worst shape of the 50 states.

It’s the third upgrade between the three major credit ratings agencies during Gov. JB Pritzker’s tenure, the other coming last year from Standard & Poor’s shortly after the first Moody’s upgrade.

The upgrade to Baa1 status, or three notches above what is referred to as “junk bond” status, reflects “solid tax revenue growth,” which allowed the state to bolster financial reserves and increase payments toward unfunded liabilities, according to Moody’s.

The upgrade to the general obligation bond rating likely means lower interest costs when the state borrows money.

1. Hope Democrats can hold on to power long enough to fix this mess.

Before another Republican Governor comes in and screws us all again.

Pritzker's chief opponent is running ads saying he will be "the worst nightmare" for many of our citizens, as "the liberals are afraid of people like me".

What the hell kind of campaign message is that? Vote for me and I will screw over as many people as I can?

But he's got big money behind him, and lots of energy among the wingnut voters.

There are several loonies running against him…really not worried.

Not so far anyway. I haven't been paying much attention to the loons who are going after the Republican nomination, but I haven't heard anything that has raised my concerns. After the primary, when we know who's actually going to run against him, well, we'll see.
