Waterloo School Board to meet Monday to officially put schools plan on the ballot

WATERLOO, Iowa (KWWL) -- Originally, it appeared that the Waterloo Schools high school merger project would be moving forward. However, after more than 2,400 voters signed a petition, it is now expected to officially go on the November ballot after tomorrow's school board meeting.

"Obviously, we wish it was just that the school board could make the decision and we move forward, but I always say that it is the community's right, it's a policy that they can follow if they want to turn in, which they did, that petition with the signatures, and that's fine," said Dr. Jared Smith, Waterloo Community School District Superintendent. "We will absolutely continue to say what we believe is fine for our kids, and what's right for our district. We still feel like we've got a really good proposal, we still feel like we've got a lot of community support."

This is a 165 million dollar project that would be paid for via an existing sales tax known as the Secure an Advanced Vision Education Fund (SAVE). The project would combine the two high schools into one new building near Central Middle School. Dr. Smith explained how they plan to sell this project to the community moving forward.

"Over the next couple months we'll share why this is a good plan for our students, why there aren't a whole lot of other great options, and why, ultimately, we feel like the community should vote positively on this project going forward."

Waterloo go back over 110 years ... it will be amazing if it can be overcome. They do have the chance to build something really amazing for the kids, and maybe the lack of good alternatives will convince people, but I'm hearing a lot of antipathy to the idea.
