McPHERSON — On Friday, shortly before participating in the 104th Annual All Schools Day parade in McPherson, U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kan., spoke briefly with the Salina Journal regarding a few current issues.
American Health Care Act

In a determined effort to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, the U.S. House earlier this month passed the American Health Care Act by a vote of 217-213. Twenty Republicans voted in opposition to the bill, as did all 193 House Democrats.

“If the current House bill is what comes before the Senate, I do not see myself or others in the Senate voting for it,” Moran said. “It’s a good thing that the Senate will be starting over. We will be crafting something fresh, something different and something better.”

Moran said a few issues that will be under consideration when crafting a bill are: What does it do to the people and families in Kansas, to the cost of their premiums, copayments and deductibles? Will it help keep physicians in practice and hospital doors open? And will it stop harming job creation?

“The Affordable Care Act had high premiums and I don’t believe that’s what people want,” Moran said. “I’m going to push for full committee hearings, and amendments from everyone, Republican or Democrat, in the Senate.”
FIRING OF COMEY

Earlier this week, President Donald Trump fired FBI Director James Comey.

The New York Times reported that Comey told associates he was fired because he failed to commit his personal loyalty to Trump during a one-on-one dinner in January.

“I’d like to know more information on it,” Moran said. “There are so many conflicting reports out there. The Senate has invited the deputy attorney general to explain what precipitated the president’s firing of the director. I’d like more information about why he was fired and why he was fired now. We must make sure the next FBI director is fully committed to justice and is independent.”
KRIS KOBACH APPOINTMENT

On Thursday, Trump announced the formation of the Commission on Election Integrity, aimed at ceasing voter fraud. He appointed Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach as co-chairman.

“I didn’t really know the commission existed,” Moran said. “I’ve been in courthouses and involved in elections across Kansas for many years. Our county election offices and election workers do everything they can to make sure all elections are absent of any wrongdoing. I’ve never seen any election of any kind in Kansas where a significant amount of wrongdoing occurred. We’ve seen a great deal of fairness in our elections.”
VISITING SALINA SOON

Salina Resistance, a group affiliated with the national Indivisible Network, has invited Moran, Rep. Roger Marshall, R-Kansas and Rep. Pat Roberts, R-Kansas, to a citizen-led town hall meeting June 1.

Moran said that each Congress he hosts a town-hall meeting in each of the 105 Kansas counties. He already has completed eight this year.

“I will make my way around to each county as the Senate schedule permits,” he said.
