Red tape snarls Kentucky program for disabled
As a busy working mother with four children — three with autism — Jennifer Adams-Tucker said it's hard enough managing school schedules, after-school activities, doctor's appointments, therapy sessions and other events.
But in recent months she's found herself devoting increasing days and hours trying to resolve disruptions, complications and outright cancellation of services through a state program for children and adults with intellectual disabilities that her three autistic children use to get therapy and other assistance.
And Adams-Tucker said she's not alone, saying many other families have experienced similar problems with the state, Medicaid-funded program known as "Michelle P."
"It shouldn't be this hard for families that already are at a disadvantage," said Adams-Tucker, who serves on several boards of programs for people with disabilities. "We shouldn't have to fight for this."
