WASHINGTON Sen. Mary Landrieu of Louisiana voted Friday to support the Affordable Care Act, despite Republican efforts to pressure her into changing her mind.

(Landrieu) is working to make sure the law is implemented correctly, said Matthew Lehner, her spokesman. She will not vote to defund the law, which was passed by Congress, signed by the president and upheld by the Supreme Court.
Majority Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia singled out Landrieu and three other red-state Republicans last week at a rally of critics of the health care law, which is unpopular in Louisiana.

Landrieu and the three other Democrats are up for re-election next year, and the health care law is expected to be a top issue in those campaigns. Thats particularly true in Louisiana where Landrieu, a moderate Democrat faces a challenge from Republican Rep. Bill Cassidy, a physician.

This is going to be difficult for many liberals in the Democratic Party to do, but we need to keep these senators in office to thwart any attempt by Republicans to defund the ACA.

(84,494 posts)I've become accustomed to expecting her to veer wrong, one too many times. I'm glad she's standing strong!
Also - why I'm confused as to why this would be difficult for many liberals in the Democratic Party to do. So-called "middle-of-the-roaders" maybe, or lieberman-esques. But not liberals. At least I'd hope not.

(15,529 posts)I would be willing to bet there are more than a few Republicans willing to do the same. More fear and loathing.

(30,058 posts)Sign up for insurance and realize the value of having health care opinions will swing and Landrieu will be on top of things. Cantor was probably trying to put pressure but it did not work.

(2,012 posts)you'd know what she's up against. Like BP, Vitter, and the whackobirds.
Takes real courage to be a liberal in Louisiana or even a Democrat.
