'Tell the truth,' Xavier University's president says of struggle to vaccinate returning students

WASHINGTON—Leaders in higher education from New Orleans and Miami Thursday related how colleges coped with a rough year of online learning and vaccine distribution amid the pandemic, during a hearing before the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee.

The hearing included Dr. C. Reynold Verret, the president of Xavier University and Madeline Pumariega, the president of Miami Dade College, a community college which, with 100,000 students, is one of the largest higher education institutions in the U.S.

Verret was asked what advice he would give universities that are trying to move to full in-person classes this fall and also are encouraging sometimes reluctant students to get the COVID-19 vaccine.

“Tell the truth,” Verret, a chemistry and immunology scholar, said. “And have venues for people to ask questions. We were founded with a mission to serve not just the nation but each other.”

If I were hiring someone, I’d weed out a lot of dumbasses just by that info. Probably illegal under employment law and HIPAA, but sounds like a useful predictor.

is requiring all students with very few exemptions (mainly medical) to be vaccinated, as they return to in person class this fall. My 18 year old granddaughters are heading to Fort Lewis College in August and they had to submit proof of vaccination. Frankly, they are glad about that. They do not want to be around people who are not vaccinated. I believe all staff are vaccinated as well. Interestingly enough, this applies to those colleges in Boebert's district as well.
